2010/04/27 City Council Resolution 2010-45RESOLUTION NO. 2010 -45 �o „�RKr;•;RK i9 Bs RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK Endorsing HEALTH ACTION'S SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL INITIATIVE WHEREAS, the City of Rohnert Park is concerned about the health and well -being of its residents and seeks to create a safe, healthy, sustainable, and livable community, and WHEREAS, Health Action, a council of community leaders whose. mission is to improve health and health care in Sonoma County, recommends local action to increase consumption of healthy food, increase physical activity, and connect all residents with prevention- focused primary health care; and WHEREAS, regular walking, biking, and using public transportation are simple and effective ways to improve the health of city residents of all ages and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and WHEREAS, Safe Routes to School programs are proven effective in promoting walking and biking to school through education, encouragement, addressing safety concerns, and improving infrastructure; and WHEREAS, local governments greatly influence the ability of residents to safely walk, bike, and use public transportation through planning, land use, transportation, economic and community development, parks and recreation, and other community services. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Rohnert Park commits to: ■ Support the Health Action's countywide Safe Routes to School initiative and use City communications media to promote walking and biking as vital health - promoting activities. ■ Support City programming (recreation programs, parks, trails, and open spaces) that encourage community walking, biking and other physical activity. ■ Take steps to improve the safety of walking and biking in the City by assessing community infrastructure and identifying priority areas where improvements are needed to support safe walking, biking, and other physical activity and to reduce dependence on cars. ■ Support other alternative /public transportation policies and programs that encourage walking and biking to work and school.
