2008/07/22 City Council Resolution 2008-112Resolution No. 2008 -112 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK DECLARING AUGUST 2008 "CLIMATE and ENERGY" MONTH WHEREAS, Sonoma County has taken a leadership role in climate protection by being the first county in the nation where 100% of its cities and the County pledged by resolution to reduce both greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions throughout the community; and WHEREAS, all Sonoma cities and the County in 2005 adopted the boldest community greenhouse gas emissions reduction target in the United States — 25% below 1990 levels by 2015; and WHEREAS, all nine Sonoma County mayors in 2005 signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, pledging to meet or beat the emission reduction targets in the Kyoto Protocol — 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and WHEREAS, increased temperatures threaten to greatly reduce the Sierra snowpack, one of the State's primary sources of water; and also threaten to further exacerbate California's air quality problems and adversely impact human health by increasing heat stress and related deaths, the incidence of infectious disease, and the risk of asthma, respiratory, and other health problems; and WHEREAS, rising sea levels threaten California's 1,100 miles of coastal real estate and natural habitats; and WHEREAS, the depletion of formerly cheap and abundant oil and gas reserves is contributing to record gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and natural gas prices, and also to ever - increasing dependency on imported fossil fuels; and WHEREAS, California has taken a leadership role in climate protection by implementing the motor vehicle greenhouse gas emission reduction regulations, implementing the Renewable Portfolio Standard, implementing the most effective building and appliance efficiency standards in the world, and on June 1, 2005, establishing greenhouse gas reduction targets for the State: by 2010 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 2000 levels, by 2020 reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels, and by 2050 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that we do hereby declare August 2008 as Climate and Energy Month and encourage residents to reduce their energy consumption by replacing old appliances and light bulbs with energy efficient models and by reducing electricity use at peak times from noon to 7:00 p.m. DULY AND REGULARLY ADOPTED this 22nd day of July, 2008.
