2007/04/10 City Council Resolution 2007-59RESOULTION NO. 2007 -59 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK SUPPORTING SENATE BILL 966 (SIMITIAN) CONCERNING THE DISPOSAL OF PHARMACEUTICALS WHEREAS, the disposal of pharmaceuticals through the solid waste system or sewage system can result in seepage of chemicals into the environment; and WHEREAS, a 2002 US Geological Society analysis of 139 strea3ns across 30 states found that 80 percent of waterways tested had measurable concentrations of prescription and nonprescription drugs, steroids, and reproductive hormones; and WHEREAS, the presence of pharmaceuticals in waterways is generally attributed to disposal through the solid waste system and sewage system; and WHEREAS, there exist systems for the disposal of pharmaceuticals in a manner that does not impact the environment; and WHEREAS, consumers require a simple and readily accessible means of directing unused pharmaceuticals to environmentally safe means of disposal; and WHEREAS, pharmacies are the retail outlets for pharmaceuticals; and WHEREAS, pharmacies are equipped to package and arrange transport of pharmaceuticals for environmentally safe means of disposal; and WHEREAS, Senate Bill 966 (Simitian) would require that pharmacies accept unused pharmaceuticals for safe disposal. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK that the City hereby expresses its support for Senate Bill 966 (Simitian).
