A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
SUPPORTING
THE MONTH OF OCTOBER AS
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH"
WHEREAS, October 2006 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, almost 212,920 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2006 and about 40,970 will die from the disease; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, except for skin cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women
after lung cancer; and
WHEREAS, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8 with African American women being more
likely to die than women of all other races; and
WHEREAS, almost 1,720 new cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2006 and close to 500 will die of the disease; and
WHEREAS, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce suffering and deaths caused by this disease; and
WHEREAS, mammography, an "x -ray" of the breast, is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer
long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it supports October as Breast Cancer Awareness
Month in Rohnert Park and encourages the public to reiterate to friends and loved ones that early cancer detection saves lives!
