The purpose of the meeting was to discuss matters o::' City personnel with representatives of Sonoma State College at whose request the meeting was held. Roll Call Present: (5) Mayor Rogers, Councilmen Buchanan, Pezonella, C. Smith and V. Smith Absent: (0) City staff present: City Manager Callinan, Chie' Koch, City Attorney Maxwell Sonoma State College representatives present: President A. R. Nichols, Jr.; Dean of Instruction Hector Lee; Executive Dean W. R. Burford; Dean of Students D. E. Walker; Chairman of Faculty William 0. Cord; Vice Chairman of Faculty C. E. Falbo; Professor of History A. R. Rygh; Staff Council Representative John J. O'Neil; President of Associated Students, Inc. Jay M. Orcutt. A discussion was held concerning the recent publicity given to the investigation of alleged communists at Sonoma State College and the action's of the City's Police Department relative to same. The attached statement was prepared at the meeting for release to the press and public. lournment The meeting adjourned at approximately 10:00 P.M. . PEZONELLA, COUNCILMAN PETER CALLINAN, CITY MANAGER THE MEETING WAS HELD FOR THE PURPOSE OF DISCUSSING THE RECENT PUBLICITY GIVEN TO AN INVESTIGATION OF ALLEGED COMMUNISTS AT SONOMA STATE COLLEGE. FOLLOWING A FULL AND FRANK DISCUSSION IT WAS AGREED AS FOLLOWS: 1. ALL INVOLVED EXPRESSED REGRET THAT THIS MATTER HAD ARISEN AND THAT THE PUBLICITY INVOLVED WAS OUT OF PROPORTION TO THE FACTS. 2. THE ACTION BY CHIEF KOCH WAS A MATTER OF ROUTINE PROCEDURE OF INVESTIGATING A COMPLAINT AND WHEN THE CHIEF IN RESPONSE TO AN INQUIRY, ADVISED THE PRESS THAT HE HAD THIS COMPLAINT UNDER INVESTIGATION, HE DID NOT SAY AND DID NOT INTEND TO SAY THERE WERE ANY COMMUNISTS ON THE COLLEGE CAMPUS. 3. IT WAS AGREED THAT CARE SHOULD BE USED IN THE FUTURE IN RELEASING INFORMATION SO AS NOT TO GIVE CREDENCE. TO UNSUBSTAKrIATED CHARGES. 4. THE CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSED CONFIDENCE IN CHIEF KOCH AND THE POLICE FORCE OF THE CtTY@ 5. 'THE CITY AND COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES EXPRESSED MUTUAL GOODWILL AND CONFIDENCE AND THE HOPE THAT THE PRESENT SPIRIT OF COOPERATION WOULD CONTINUE.
