Parks & Recreation Commission Joint Session
April 6, 1992
The Council of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in a joint
session with members of the City's Parks & Recreation Commission
at the Dynasty Restaurant, located at 6555 Hunter Drive, Rohnert
Park, California, with Mayor Spiro presiding.
Call to Order Mayor Spiro called the joint session to order at approximately
7:00 p.m.
Present Councilmembers Eck, Hopkins, Reilly, and Mayor Spiro
Parks & Recreation Commission members
Absent Councilmember Hollingsworth and Parks & Recreation Commissioner
O'Brien.
Staff Present City Manager Netter and Recreation Director Pekkain.
There was a brief welcome by Mayor Spiro and Parks & Recreation
Commission Chairman Jim Stevens.
Mayor Spiro indicated that the purpose of the meeting was to
discuss matter of mutual interest and concerns and to facilitate
the best possible communication between the Parks & Recreation
Commission and the City Council members.
A wide range of discussion was held on a variety of topics
including, the Parks & Recreation Commission's Master
Plan /Priorities for Recreational Facilities, the upcoming
1992/93 budget and possible cuts, and the recommendation by the
Parks & Recreation Commission on the Aquatics Master Plan.
Commissioner Stevens informed the Council that the Aquatics
Master Plan is in the process of being reviewed over the next
six months to a year and should be coming to the City Council
some time in fiscal year 1992/93. Discussion continued on
between the Council and Commission members on the priority
listings and the Commissioners thoughts and recommending certain
priorities.
Others items discussed were the Responsible Hospitality Project
that the City Council recently approved for implementation and
staff gave an update on the evolution of the Community Outreach
for Youth and Families (COYF) and how a new division has been
structured in the Department of Public Safety now called the
Youth and Family Services. During that discussion staff
informed the Commissioners that Jan White a local citizen has
taken on the project of attempting to locate a boys and girls
club in Rohnert Park.
Discussion continued on the Aquatics Master Plan and the
potential siting of an indoor pool or a lap pool on the
Community Center's site. Also discussed was the possibility of

siting a pool on the high school property in a joint program
with the School District. Discussion continued.
Recreation Director Pekkain updated the City Council on the
Coach's Clinic and that over the past several years it has
become a very worthwhile program and that now is mandatory for
all coaches to complete this course as criteria for becoming a
coach.
Misc. Items Commissioner Plaisted requested the opportunity for
Commissioners to attend training sessions in order to keep more
informed on items that Parks & Recreation Commissioners deal
with. There was also a general discussion on the use_ of the
parks and the large number of participants in the Rohnert Park
Baseball League especially in the Pee Wee League.
Councilman Eck commented that he was very appreciative of the
Parks & Recreation Commissioner's pro- active attitudes and said
that a lot has been accomplished over the past couple of years.
Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the joint session
was adjourned by Mayor Spiro at approximately 8:45 p.m.
