2005/03/08 City Council ResolutionRescinded by Resolution RESOLUTION NO. 2005- 53 No. 2005 - 83 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK APPROVING A DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY MISSION STATEMENT AND PROACTIVE PURSUIT OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY WHILE MAINTAINING RESPECT FOR THE PUBLIC WHEREAS, Sonoma County and the City of Rohnert Park experienced a significant increase in crime rates and violent crimes during the past five years and this criminal activity was having a negative impact on our community and Department of Public Safety; and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Safety adopted an agency philosophy in October 2002 that, among other things, depicted the Department as a balanced agency providing enforcement and service; and WHEREAS, in September 2003, the Department of Public Safety embarked on making Rohnert Park the safest city along the US 101 corridor and developed a Planned Approach to Making Rohnert Park a Safer City; and WHEREAS, there has been a considerable reduction in criminal activity within Rohnert Park during the past year and statistics show a strong relationship between an increase in drug arrests from proactive police work and a decrease in theft crimes; and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Safety reported to the Council on February 16, 2005 its implementation of its change in philosophy emphasizing proactive- police work including pursuing criminal behavior either prior to its occurrence or while criminals were actively engaged in criminal conduct; and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Safety proposed a simpler mission statement: "Making Rohnert Park the Safest City. " BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it does hereby concur with and approve the Department of Public Safety mission statement: "Making Rohnert Park tite Safest City- ff BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Public Safety should continue to proactively pursue all criminal behavior, investigate suspicious persons and activity and maintain a high profile in the community and particularly in high crime areas. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Public Safety should balance its aggressive approach against criminal activity with service to members of our community, treating all people with dignity and in a fair and respectful manner.
