2005/03/22 City Council Resolution (8)RESOLUTION NO. 2005- 80
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
Observing
APRIL 7, 2005 as WMW MMLTfi DAY
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization announced Make Every Mother and Child Count as its slogan for this year; and
WHEREAS, too many mothers and children in low and middle income countries are suffering and dying each year. Every minute a mother dies from complications of pregnancy and
childbirth. Every minute 20 children under the age of five die. Health care costs are a major deterrent for families seeking health care with the poor suffering most; and
WHEREAS, Healthy mothers are a valuable asset. When mothers die or are sick, their families and communities suffer. Every year an estimated one million young children die as a result
of the death of their mothers. It is estimated that every dollar invested in child health returns seven dollars through reduced spending on social welfare and increased productivity of young
people. Illness and malnutrition negatively affect cognitive development, body size, strength, educational achievement, and work productivity; and
WHEREAS, effective knowledge and tools exist to reduce the suffering and death but they must reach the mothers and children who need them. Rapid, coordinated action is needed to get
essential / affordable packages of proven interventions into the right hands requires political and technical leadership as well as commitment of financial resources.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it hereby observes April 7, 2005 as World Health Day and urges its residents to be informed of
their rights and responsibilities, to practice behaviors that promote health such as eating healthy foods and practicing good hygiene, to take children for vaccinations, and to be certain that
the mother receives proper prenatal care.
