2004/03/23 City Council Resolution (6)RESOLUTION NO. 2004 -59 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK OBSERVING Sunday, April 18 through Sunday, April 25, 2004 FOR JUSTICE AND HUMANITY In Remembrance of Holocaust Victims, Survivors, and Rescuers WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state - sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims with over six million murdered Millions of others were slaughtered as well, i.e. Gypsies, the handicapped, Poles, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents for racial, ethnic, or national reasons; and WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments. WHEREAS, we, the people of the City of Rohnert Park, should always remember the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny and rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom; and WHEREAS, this year's theme is "for Justice and Humanity" which honors freedom and respect for all people. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it supports the U.S. Act of Congress (Public Law 96 -388, October 7, 1980) and recognizes April 18, 2004 as Yom Ha- Shoah, the International Day of Remembrance of Holocaust victims, survivors, and rescuers. We ask that our citizens strive to overcome intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance.
