A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
Proclaiming
The FOURTH FRIDAY in APRIL as
CHILDREN'S MEMORIAL DAY
In Memory of Children Who have Died by Violence.
WHEREAS, throughout America, tragic cases of violence against children are occurring with
increasing frequency and senselessness, destroying innocent lives and devastating families; and
WHEREAS, Sonoma County has experienced violent preventable child deaths via guns,
knives, bats, automobiles, physical abuse, and suicide; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park believes in the celebration of life
and hope for the future through our children, and deplore and condemn acts of violence
committed upon the children of our, communities; and
WHEREAS, the Committee to Minimize Occurrences of Violence in Everyday Society
(MOVES) and the Sonoma County human Services department are committed to raising
public awareness of the need to care for all of our children and to honor young lives lost; and
WHEREAS, MOVES has acquired a Children's Memorial Flag from the Child Welfare
League of America, which has become a recognizable symbol of the need to do a better job of
protecting children and which has been adopted by other California communities.
NOW, 'T'HEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
that the 4h Friday in April [April 23, 2004] be proclaimed as Children's Memorial pay in
Rohnert Park.
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the Children's Memorial Flag be flown April 23,
2004, and for a week whenever a child dies by violence in the City of Rohnert Park, in
remembrance of precious young lives cut short through senseless violence. s, ,
DULY AND REGULARLY ADOPTED this 13" day ofApril, 2004.
