2004/05/11 City Council Resolution (6)WHEREAS, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States: and
WHEREAS, one in four deaths in the United States is from cancer; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 556,500 Americans are expected to die from cancer in 2004,
more than 1500 per day; and
WHEREAS, a projected 138,000 Californians who are currently living, will develop
cancer this year; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 2,070 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Sonoma
County alone this year; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is the nationwide community -based health
organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem; and
WHEREAS, the Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event and
means by which the organization accomplishes its' mission; and
. WHEREAS, Rohnert Park has the pleasure of hosting the
Relay For Life on June 5 & 6, 2004 at Rancho Cotate High School, of which there
are nearly 4,200 events nationwide, to honor cancer survivors, educate the general
public about the importance of early detection and prevention of cancer, and raise funds
in the fight against cancer.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Rohnert Park City Council hereby proclaims
Rohnert Park to be a Relay For Life Community, and urges our citizens to participate
in this effort to eradicate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving
lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education,
advocacy and service.
