A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK

SEPTEMBER 2004
As Literacy Month in Rohnert Park
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park joins with other cities in our nation
by endorsing September as Literacy Month; and
WHEREAS, strong literacy skills are essential for citizens to reach full potential and to
escape the obstacles faced by those with inadequate literacy. Literacy encompasses a broad
range of skills such as reading, writing, math, critical thinking, and speaking English; and
WHEREAS, literacy effects every avenue of life: a literate workforce enhances our economy;
health literacy effects the overall health of a community through prevention and/or early
diagnosis of illness; financial literacy encourages money management, savings, investments,
and the responsible use of credit leading to sound financial decisions; citizenship literacy
empowers citizens by enabling them to exercise their rights and responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, parents are a child's first and most important role
model in creating a foundation for lifelong learning. Parents may
become full partners with teachers, principals, and administrators

WHEREAS, the City of Rohnert Park offers a variety of programs to
promote literacy such as: adult education, a beautiful library,
computer classes, volunteer tutors, and mentoring programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Rohnert Park that it does hereby proclaim September as
Literacy Month in Rohnert Park and urges its residents to participate
in its observance.
