A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
Observing
OCTOBER 49, 2004
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
WHEREAS, the City of Rohnert Park is dedicated to the safety of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, approximately 80 percent of all fire deaths in the United States occur in the home.
Roughly 11 people die per day in homes fires; and
WHEREAS, the National Fire Protection Association set aside a week in October to keep the
public informed about the importance of fire protection:
• Plan your escape and practice it at least twice a year.
• Teach Children to Stop, Drop, and Roll and to stay away from matches and lighters
• Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires.
• Keep Smoke Detectors Working. Smoke alarms in your home cut your chance of dying
in a fire nearly in half. Smoke alarms and automatic fire sprinklers cut your risk by 82 %.
✓ Keep Space Heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn. Portable or fixed space
heaters are the leading cause of home fires in December, January, and February.
✓ Do not overload extension cords or run them under rugs; if they are frayed, replace them.
✓ Store only small amounts of Gasoline outside of your home.
✓ Clear flammable vegetation and keep roof clear of leaves.
✓ Water Christmas tree daily and keep away from heat sources.
✓ Over the last ten years, candle fires have almost tripled resulting in 102 deaths and $278
million in property damage. 40% of these fires started in the bedroom.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
does hereby proclaim October 4 -9, 2004 as FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in Rohnert Park and
urges its residents to practice the above precautions.
