A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
Supporting
The Month of OCTOBER
"NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH"
WHEREAS, each October, national domestic violence organizations together with Government agencies,
corporate and business leaders, professional associations, law enforcement agencies, hospitals, etc.
sponsor activities to raise awareness of domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, Liz Claiborne, Inc. has organized a fundraising shirt sale and will donate profits to
domestic violence charities (www.ivillage.com]; The Body Shop has organized a phone drive collecting
deactivated cell phones [303/839 -1852 ext. 105], the No More Tour organized by Liz Claiborne and
Marie Claire Magazine is a multi -city tour designed to raise awareness [Sharon_ isenberg @liz.com]; the
National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence encourages health care providers to screen
patients and report abuse [www.endabuse.org], and the YWCA will sponsor violence prevention activities
i.e. tree plantings, candlelight vigils, and community forums [www.ywca.org]; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence is intolerable and must be stopped. Estimates range that from 960,000
to 3 million women are physically abused by their husband or boyfriend per year; and
WHEREAS, more than 3 women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day in America.
Pregnant women are more likely to be victims of homicide than to die of any other cause; and
WHEREAS, approximately 1 in 5 female high- school students reports being physically and/or sexually
abused by a dating partner; and
WHEREAS, Children who witness domestic violence often grow up believing that physical cruelty in
relationships is acceptable and may tend to perpetuate a cycle of violence.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it does hereby
support the month of October as: NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARARENESS MONTH in the City of
Rohnert Park and urges all citizens to participate in local, national, and global campaigns. Please, get
involved, commit to eliminating domestic violence and reach out to its victims.
