A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
Commemorating Sunday
October 24, 2004 as UNITED NATIONS DAY
WHEREAS, the United Nations was founded in 1945; its anniversary is observed October 24 annually;
and
WHEREAS, one of the principal mandates of the United Nations — "to achieve international cooperation
in solving problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character" — remains as valid today
as when those words were written into the Charter more than a half century ago; and
WHEREAS, in September 2000, 189 countries, including the United States, agreed on the Millennium
Development Goals; and
WHEREAS, the third Millennium Development Goal focuses on promoting gender equality and the
empowerment of women, and seeks to eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education
preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015; and
WHEREAS, the problem of unequal treatment of women leads to illiterate societies, poor maternal and
child health, and overall low levels of development in every corner of the globe; and
WHEREAS, the United States is a champion of women's rights, most recently in its work in Afghanistan
and Iraq; and
WHEREAS, the United States must continue to work with the United Nations and U.N. agencies in order
to provide a coordinated effort in both assessing the current problem of gender equity and determining the
strategies best suited for achieving the goal of eliminating gender disparity in education; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA -USA), in
cooperation with other organizations, has declared "Women's Rights and Empowerment and Gender
Equity: The Millennium Development Goals" as its theme for the 2004 United Nations Day
commemorations.
W, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it
cially recognizes OCTOBER 24, 2004 as UNITED NATIONS DAY and supports the need for
)rts on both local and international levels to promote global cooperative initiatives toward a peaceful
more just world.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City will fly the UN flag during the week of October 18 -24, 2004.
