2004/10/12 City Council Resolution (6)RESOLUTION NO. 2004 -266
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
Observing
OC° UBM 18 -24, 2004 as WRLD POPULATICOT AwARENEW P=K
wHEREAs, by the year 2050, the number of people on the Earth will reach 9.3 billion,
compared to 6.3 billion today. The U.S. will grow by nearly 50 %; and
wxEREAs, the general trend is for Western developed nations to decline -the US being the
major exception -and developing states to expand; and
wHE'REAs, Nearly 99% of population increase takes place in poor countries. India is
expected to overtake China with 1.6 billion people. The generation of people between 15 and 24 is
the largest it has ever been with one billion teens just entering their reproductive years; and
wHEREAs, the population of California has grown 70% and is expected to add 1.56 million
people between 2000 and 2020. US population growth is from immigration. Good planning can't hold
back sprawl when people arrive in tidal -wave numbers. Also Americans live longer; and
wHEREAs, the risk of wars being fought over water is rising because of population growth.
With the world's population growing at exponential rates, there is extreme pressure on water supplies
to provide drinking water and irrigation for food. In 2025 there will be another two billion people to
feed - 95% in urban areas; and
wHEREAs, population growth and affluence is outpacing production. China is rapidly losing
fertile land as cities spread and soil erodes and groundwater to irrigate crops is drying up. Worldwide
population growth and loss of land have cut fertile land available to feed each person in half since
1960. Millions of wells throughout Asia are rapidly depleting supplies. As people become better off
they eat more meat and animals consume several pounds of grain for every pound of meat. About
240,000 people are born each day, adding to the demand for food, water, and other resources; and
wHEREAs, educating young women and men on contraception and healthcare has shown
promising results but funds are not available to reach the vast target populations; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT REsoLvED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it
hereby proclaims: October 18 -24, 2004 as world Population Awareness week and urges
our citizens to contemplate the issue and do whatever they can to help.
DULY AND REGULARLY ADOPTED: this 12th day of October, 2004.
