2002/03/12 City Council Resolution (2)RESOLUTION NO. 2002- 48 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK OBSERVING Thursday, April 9, 2002 DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state - sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims with over six million murdered. Millions of others were slaughtered as well, i.e. Gypsies, the handicapped, Poles, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents for racial, ethnic, or national reasons; and WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments. Thousands took a stand against the persecution and killing of innocent people. It is their rare heroism that remains a source of inspiration and is especially meaningful in the aftermath of September 11 `h when the US experienced both the tyranny of evil and magnificent acts of courage; and WHEREAS, we, the people of the City of Rohnert Park, should always remember the Holocaust and remain vigilant against bigotry and tyranny and rededicate ourselves to the principles of equality and justice as well as remember the potential of each of us to make a difference; and WHEREAS, this year's theme is "Memories of Courage" which honors those who dared to take a stand in the face of tyranny and fight oppression and hatred. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it supports the U.S. Act of Congress (Public Law 96 -388, October 7, 1980) and recognizes April 9, 2002 as Yom Ha- Shoah, the International Day of Remembrance for victims of the Holocaust.
