2003/03/11 City Council ResolutionRESOLUTION NO. 2003 -40 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK OBSERVING Tuesday, April 29, 2003 DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state - sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Although Jews were the primary victims with over six million murdered, the handicapped, homosexuals, Gypsies, Poles, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, political dissidents and other groups were also targeted for annihilation for racial, ethnic, or national reasons; and WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments. Thousands stood against the persecution and slaughter of innocent people. It is their rare heroism that remains a source of inspiration; and WHEREAS, we, the citizens of the City of Rohnert Park, should always remember the unspeakable deeds of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against prejudice and tyranny and dedicate ourselves to the principles of equal justice for all; and WHEREAS, a Day of Remembrance has been set aside for people everywhere to pause and remember the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the Holocaust and to reflect upon everyone's need for tolerance from all peoples; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it supports the U.S. Act of Congress (Public Law 96 -388, October 7, 1980) recognizing April 29, 2003 as Yom Ha- Shoah, the International Day of Remembrance for victims of the Holocaust.
