2003/08/26 City Council Resolution (4)WHEREAS, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is conducting its voluntary 3`p4re the
lir program through October 15`'' in counties comprising the San Francisco Bay Area, and
WHEREAS, ozone forms when emissions from vehicles, power plants, and industry react with
mnlight. ozone irritates the eyes, nose, and lungs causing inflammation, chest pain, and difficulty
Breathing; and
WHEREAS, when ozone concentrations violate Federal health standards (pollution), a Spare the
Air Advisory is issued, usually about twenty times per season; and
WHEREAS, over thirty - million Americans live with chronic lung disease. Air pollution is most
deleterious to these individuals as well as children and the elderly. Children are about 40% more likely to
suffer attacks because respiratory defenses are not fully formed, airways are smaller, breathing is more
rapid and they play hard thus taking in more pollution — plus they spend more time outdoors; and
WHEREAS, carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, telecommuting, or taking transit is an
effective way to reduce pollution. ff everyone took an alternative once a week, there would be 20% less
traffic and, thus, pollution!; and
WHEREAS, on hot, stagnant days or days with high smog concentrations, please:
• Reduce driving and/or Rideshare
• Postpone using gasoline- powered lawn & garden equipment,
• Refuel your car after the sun has gone down and don't top off the tank
• Avoid using products containing volatile organics such as aerosol sprays, oil -based paint and
lighter fluid.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
does hereby support the Spare the Air campaign and urges its employees and citizens to take measures to
reduce air pollution.'
