A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
Commemorating
Friday, OCTOBER 24, 2003 as UNITED NATIONS DAY
WHEREAS, the United Nations was founded in 1945, and its anniversary is observed October 24 annually; and
WHEREAS, one of the principal mandates of the United Nations — "to achieve international cooperation in
solving problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character" — remains as valid today as when those words
were written into the Charter more than a half century ago; and
WHEREAS, in early 2003, the United Nations launched the Literacy Decade; and
WHEREAS, on September 12, 2002, President George W. Bush announced that the United States would rejoin
the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) -the lead U.N. agency for the Literacy
Decade; and
WHEREAS, the problem of illiteracy and access to basic education is international in scope, transcends borders,
and impacts children and adults in every corner of the globe; and
WHEREAS, there are currently 860 million illiterate adults worldwide; and
WHEREAS, access to primary basic education is one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals as
agreed upon by all UN member states — including the United States — at the Millennium Summit in September 2000; and
WHEREAS, the United States must continue to work with the United Nations and UN agencies in order to
provide a coordinated, multilateral effort in both assessing the current problem of global illiteracy and determining the
strategies and mechanisms best suited for achieving the goal of universal primary education; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Association of the United States of American (UNA -USA), in cooperation with
other organizations, has declared "Global Communities: Building a Bridge to Literacy" as its theme for the 2003 United
Nations Day commemorations..
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it officially
recognizes OCTOBER 24 2003 as UNITED NATIONS DAY and supports the need for efforts on both local and
international levels to promote global literacy for a healthier, safer, more productive world.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City will fly the UN flag during the week of October 20 -26, 2003.
DULY AND REGULARLY ADOPTED this 14th day of October, 2003.
