2003/10/28 City Council Resolution (4)Resolution No. 2003- 254 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OCTOBER THE Y O �ROHNERT PARK PROCLAIMING "RED RIBBON WEEK" DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION & AWARENESS WEEK WHEREAS, Drugs and alcohol abuse in America annually create staggering societal costs and prevent millions of people from reaching their full potential at school, on the job, and in their communities; and WHEREAS, over 14 million Americans use illegal drugs, 17 million Americans are alcoholics or abusers of alcohol and the rate of drug and alcohol abuse by our Nation's youth is cause for alarm; and WHEREAS, Research indicates that youth who avoid the early use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are less likely to engage in other harmful behaviors such as crime, delinquency, and other illegal acts; and WHEREAS, we must make prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse a high priority; and WHEREAS, prevention begins at home; it depends upon the active participation of families, schools, and community organizations in education and outreach programs that clearly communicate to children the dangers inherent in drug and alcohol abuse. Things a youth can do to predict a bright uture: ■ Be confident and self - assured in all you do [drugs will fill you with doubt & fear] ■ Enjoy happy & close family ties [drugs will make you strangers] ■ Strive for good grades [drugs will make you an underachiever] ■ Pride yourself on being attractive & well - groomed [drugs will trash your looks] ■ Choose to hang out with winners [drugs will land you with the losers] ■ Manage your money and it will work for you [drugs will steal it from you] ■ Look forward to a bright future [drugs will turn your dreams into nightmares] NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park does hereby support and proclaim: October 23 -31, 2003 as "RED RIBBON WEEK" and calls upon our citizens to wear a red ribbon throughout the weep in recognition of their commitment to a healthy, drug -free lifestyle.
