RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF ROHNERT PARK OPPOSING
THE ELIMINATION BY CONSOLIDATION OF THE SONOMA COUNTY FAIR
WHEREAS, California Fairs are a credit to the state, a leading
attraction for outside visitors and a principal showplace for the
best in the state's agriculture, commerce and way of life; and
WHEREAS, California voters directly approved the special fund
providing state support to fairs and expositions from revenues
derived from legalized betting on regulated horse racing; and
WHEREAS, Fairs have an educational value and function that can
be assured only by a definite level of financial support and would
be greatly sacrificed by profit - and -loss standards of operation; and
WHEREAS, the Fairs of California have developed fairgrounds
with a variety of special facilities which serve a multitude of
agricultural and public purposes in addition to the Fairs themselves;
and
WHEREAS the state - supported Fairs of California have been a
great asset to the communities they serve by stimulating improvement
in agricultural, industrial, commercial, home - making and educational
fields; and
WHEREAS, the majority of Fairs place no direct expense on local
taxpayers because voters approved the law legalizing betting on
horse races with the provision that a portion of racing revenues
be allocated to a Fairs and Expositions fund; and
WHEREAS, support from monies in the Fair and Exposition Fund
has resulted in development of California Fairs as an outstanding
educational, recreational and family entertainment medium for millions
of persons annually; and
WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the value of the Sonoma
County Fair to the agricultural, industrial and commercial interests
of this area and the economic benefits to the community of the Fair
and other events and activities held on the fairgrounds.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council is opposed
to any consolidation of Fairs which would result in the removal or
elimination of any of the Existing Fairs.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be
sent to Governor Reagan, Little Hoover Commission, Senator
Randolph Collier, and Assemblyman William Bagley.
