RESOLUTION NO. 69-
RESOLUTION REQUESTING ADDITIONAL STUDY CONCERNING
ON- CAMPUS STUDENT HOUSING PLANNED FOR SONOMA STATE
COLLEGE
WHEREAS, Sonoma State College officials have revealed plans
for the construction of 600 units of on- campus student housing by
1972; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park and
many community leaders question the immediate need for said on-
campus student housing; and
WHEREAS, in prior years the officials of Sonoma State College;
have indicated a need for additional campus area for education
facilities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Rohnert Park's General Plan provides
for ample student housing immediately adjacent to the Sonoma State:
College campus; and
WHEREAS, the student housing needs of Sonoma State College
;appear as if they are being adequately handled by off - campus
;student housing; and
WHEREAS, off - campus student housing facilities have been
!developed to provide for the students of Sonoma State College; and
WHEREAS, there is a substantial vacancy factor in some of
€the facilities developed for students at Sonoma State College,
;especially Jack London Hall, a student facility developed in co-
�� operation with.Sonoma State College officials; and
WHEREAS, the presentation of preliminary plans for the on-
=campus student housing are scheduled for consideration by the
;Board of Trustees of the California State Colleges; and
WHEREAS, the design of the proposed on- campus student housing
'facilities are not the typical on- campus student housing dormi-
tories that is found in such other public institutions; and
WHEREAS, the student unrest on other state college campuses
may be a valid reason for reviewing the planned development of

on- campus student housing at Sonoma State College; and
WHEREAS, any development of on- campus student housing should
be done in increments .small enough not to cause any serious impact
in the development of off - campus student housing; and
WHEREAS, due to the defeat of the college bond measure on
;the November 1968 ballot additional enrollment at Sonoma State
;College will be curtailed somewhat; and
WHEREAS the development at one time of 600 units of on- campus
;student housing will have a serious impact on local developers in
Dattempting to obtain financing for student off - campus housing; and
WHEREAS, these local developers, in cooperation with the
City, have provided many improvements necessary for the orderly
;development of the college area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
;City of Rohnert Park that for the reasons cited above, that the
lCouncil does respectfully request the Board of Trustees of the

!California State Colleges and Sonoma State College officials to
Idelay taking any action on the proposed on- campus student housing
!for Sonoma State College until a complete report concerning the
needs for on- campus student housing is provided, which would take
pinto consideration the ability of the community to provide adequa
Istudent housing off - campus.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be for-
Iwarded to the Board of Trustees of California State Colleges,
Governor Reagan, Senator Randolph Collier, Assemblyman William T.
fiBagley, President Ambrose Nichols of Sonoma State College, the
,Citizens Advisory Board for Sonoma State College, Rohnert Park
°.Chamber of Commerce and other interested parties.
