ATT ST: n.� Deputy City Clerk arm M_ CITY OF ROHNERT PARK Mayor B a A � ABSE( AYE 1 AYE , R', A -SWULIN S��ORT AYE PXE 3 NOES ABSENT 2 ABSTAIN 0 City of Rohnert Park ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN DEFINITION July, 1990 Under general supervision, operate and maintain the Animal Control Shelter, supervise and coordinate the work of staff and volunteers, assure the healthy and humane care of animals temporarily housed in the Shelter, facilitate the redemption and adoption of animals from the shelter, maintain adequate records, perform necessary medical procedures under the direction of a veterinarian, and do related work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Supervises the care and feeding of animals brought to the animal shelter; makes certain that at all times the Shelter is kept in a clean and sanitary condition; supervises and monitors the sale of animal licenses and the collection of established fees; issues and distributes licenses; assists members of the public seeking to redeem an impounded animal or seeking to adopt an animal; maintains appropriate daily records; requisitions supplies; prepares monthly statistical reports for the Director of Public Safety which include financial records as well as records on all animals impounded, released, or destroyed; receives animals and separates for observation all animals that show signs of rabies or other disease; takes reports concerning animal bites; verifies rabies vaccinations, and supervises and performs quarantine of animals which have bitten humans or other animals; reports suspected cases of rabies to proper health offices and arranges for necessary tests and treatment of animals and suspected victims and follows up on test results; conducts physical examinations of animals to make preliminary determination of the nature of illness or injury; administers medications and immunizations; maintains inventory of all pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies; assists veterinarian in providing health care to animals and may assist veterinarians in performing surgery and rendering emergency care; assists and possibly administers euthanasia according to established procedures; may provide for the disposal of euthanized animals. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Possession of a valid Animal Health Technician Certificate issued by the California State Board of Examiners. Supervising Animal Health Technician - 2 DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Laws and regulations pertaining to animal control; Medication and pharmaceuticals used in animal care; Operation and functions of an animal control shelter; The symptoms and characteristics of common animal diseases; The humane care of animals; Physical and behavioral characteristics of domestic animals; Supervisory principles, techniques and practices; The effective use and coordination of volunteers; Record - keeping procedures; Euthanasia procedures. and Ability to: Deal courteously and effectively with the general public; Effectively deal with a variety of animals; Maintain accurate and legible records; Cooperate with those contacted in the course of work; Lift, carry, and handle animals weighing over 75 pounds. and Training and Experience: any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be: Two years of experience in performing animal care tasks in a veterinary office or animal shelter is preferable.
