1990/08/14 City Council Resolution (12)RESOLUTION N0. 90-184 A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING OPPOSITION T0 ANY RESTRICTION OR ELIMINATION OF THE FEDERAL TAX DEDUCTION FOR STATE AND LOCAL INCOME AND PROPERTY TAXES WHEREAS the United States Conference of Mayors has informed the City of Rohnort Par` - that in the U.S. House of Representatives there is consideration being given to eliminating or restricting the federal tax deduction for state and local income and property tuxes; and WHEREAS, he itemized Federal Income Tax deduction for state and local - taxes has 'een a fundamental component of our nation's tax policy and o cornerstone of fiscal federalism since the imposition of the Federal Income Tux many years ago; and WHEREAS, he deduction of state and local income and property taxes on the Federal tax return is one of the few remaining tax benefits enjoyed by middle income families; and WHEREAS, in recent years the Federal Government has modified the Federal Income Tex System so that most Americans now pay more taxes than previously was the case; and WHEREAS, members of Congress should keep in mind that their actions concerning changes to the Federal lnrnma Tax System can have a negative impact at the local and state levels; and WHEREAS, it is the consensus of the Council of the City of Rohnort Park that Congress should retain the current Federal Income Tax deduction for state and local income and property taxes. NON, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it does hereby go on record as Urging Congress to retain the current Federal Income Tax deduction for state and local income and property taxes. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Congressman Douglas Bosco, Senator Alan Cranston, Senator Pet* Wilson, and Now York Congressman McGrath with the request that they use their powers of persuasion to prevent any change in the Federal Income Tax laws to eliminate or restrict the deduction for state and local income and property taxes.
