1991/08/13 City Council Resolution (3)RESOLUTION NO. 91-173 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF R0HNERT PARK AUTHORIZING CITY PARTICIPATION IN THE 5ON0MA COUNTY RELEAF PROGRAM WHEREAS, neighborhood tree plantings can contribute to social well being and promote a sense of community; and WHEREAS, tree planting teaches youths that they can participate directly in the improvement Of their surroundings and their community; and WHEREAS, trees planted in our towns and cities connect us with the beauty Of Our natural environment; and WHEREAS, the growing demand for energy puts a strain on the world's limited natural resources; and WHEREAS, our environment is deteriorating from our increased use of fossil fuels; and WHEREAS, shade produced by trees planted on east, south and west sides of buildings have been shown to reduce energy consumption; and WHEREAS, urban trees also mitigate the heat island effect, thereby reducing energy consumption; and WHEREAS, the City of ROhOert Park has had a policy of promoting stewardship of our urban forests; and WHEREAS, the City is desirous of encouraging the planting and maintenance of trees throughout Ruhnert Park; and WHEREAS, SOAn0a County ReLedf and Pacific Gas and Electric Company are conducting a program to plant trees in residential neighborhoods in order to conserve energy. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Rnhnert Park that the City shall participate in the Sonoma County ReLeaf program and officially declares October 1991 JS "A Shade Better" month' BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager 1s hereby instructed t0 provide limited staff support for the ReLeaf program and to authorize use of o public building t0 hold ReLeaf program training sessions.
