2000/03/28 City Council Resolution 2000-63RESOLUTION NO. 2000-63 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK OBSERVING Sunday, April 30, through Sunday, May 7, 2000 DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state- sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims — six million were murdered; Gypsies, the handicapped, Poles and other groups were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic or national reasons; and WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and WHEREAS, we the people of the City of Rohnert Park should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against bigotry and tyranny and rededicate ourselves to the principles of equality and justice for all; and WHEREAS, the Days of Remembrance have been set aside for citizens to remember the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the Holocaust as well as to reflect upon our own need for respect of all peoples; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that in support of a U.S. Act of Congress (Public Law 96 -388, October 7, 1980) we declare the week of Sunday, April 30, through Sunday, May 7, 2000, including the international Day of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, as Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
