RESOLUTION NO. 2000 - 01
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
PROCLAIMING
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2000
PUBLIC BROADCASTING DAY
WHEREAS, public broadcasting provides unique and valuable services to the citizens of Rohnert
Park and all of California; and
WHEREAS, these services include quality children's programming, in -depth news coverage of
national and international events, award - winning science, nature, and cultural programs, classical music,
international music, bi- lingual programming, educational programming, and many other topics not
available to local viewers via other media; and
WHEREAS, public radio and television have flourished in the state over the past five decades,
both in university environments and community - supported stations, including the creation of three (KRCB
Television and Radio and KBBF Radio) in Sonoma County alone; and
WHEREAS, corporate consolidation of commercial broadcast stations has tended to distance
ownership from the communities in which those stations operate, while public broadcast stations remain
locally owned, operated and accountable; and
WHEREAS, by refusing to broadcast commercials, public radio and television stations are
without the primary source of financial support enjoyed by commercial broadcasters; and
WHEREAS, federal financial support for public broadcasting has become politicized in recent
years, and therefore is a less reliable source for operating funds than in prior years; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Communications Commission has decreed that all public television
stations shall commence digital broadcasting no later than 2003, a technical conversion that carries
substantial costs for new studio and transmission equipment, but neither the FCC nor any other federal
agency has provided funding to enable this requirement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
hereby recognizes Wednesday, January 19, 2000, as Public Broadcasting Day in California-, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this council joins our local public broadcasters, KRCB
Radio and Television and KBBF Radio in urging the Governor and the Legislature of the State of
California to begin to provide annual financial support for the state's public broadcasters.
DULY AND REGULARLY ADOPTED this 11"' day of January, 2000.
