A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park
Commemorating
OCTOBER 24, 2000 as UNITED NATIONS DAY
and
OCTOBER 23-28,2000 as UNITED NATIONS FLAG WEEK
WHEREAS, the United Nations was founded October 24, 1945; and
WHEREAS, its principal mandate is — "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war "; and
WHEREAS, the United States was one of the founding members of the United Nations, and continues to be a leader in
supporting democratic values, including efforts toward the peaceful resolution of conflict; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Declaration on a Culture of Peace promotes a set of values, attitudes, traditions, and
behaviors based on respect for life, ending of violence, and promotion of non - violence through education, dialogue, and
cooperation; and
WHEREAS, the year 2000 is designated as the International Year for the Culture of Peace by the United Nations
General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, if the United Nations is to continue its important work in the advancement of human rights, the protection
of the environment, preventing and resolving conflict, and promoting humane and democratic values, it must have
support from both the United States government and the American citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it officially recognizes:
OCTOBER 24, 2000as UNITED NATIONS DAYS and OCTOBER 23 -28 as UNITED NATIONS FLAG WEEK
