A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
PROCLAIMING
WORLD POPULATION AWARENESS WEEK
OCTOBER 22 -28, 2000
WHEREAS, world population today exceeds six billion and continues to increase by one billion every 13
years; and
WHEREAS, the environmental, economic, and social consequences of rapid population growth are not
limited to the developing world but extend to all nations and to all people; and
WHEREAS, 1.5 billion people live on less than one dollar a day, 790 million go to bed hungry every night
and a disproportionately large share of the poorest and the malnourished are girls and women; and
WHEREAS, two - thirds of the 130 million children not attending school are girls; and
WHEREAS, with each passing minute a woman somewhere on Earth dies from pregnancy or childbirth
complications — a total of 600,000 every year and at least 50 million women suffer some health
consequences resulting from childbirth; and
WHEREAS, 350 million married women in developing countries still lack access to information, education
and the means to obtain a range of modern family planning methods; and
WHEREAS, the theme of World Population Awareness Week this year is "Saving Women's Lives," with a
strong commitment to establishing as a major health priority the reduction of maternal mortality — through
safe, efficient, effective, affordable and voluntary interventions that respect cultural and moral convictions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it hereby
proclaims the Week of
October 22 -28 as World Population Awareness Week
and urges all citizens of our state to take cognizance of this event and participate in its observance.
