A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
HONORING & RECOGNIZING
STEPHAN C. LEONOUDAKIS
OF THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, HIGHWAY & TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT
UPON HIS RETIREMENT, JANUARY 5, 2001
WHEREAS, Stephan C. Leonoudakis was appointed Director of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District on December 24,
1962 and served until January 5, 2001; and
WHEREAS, Stephan C. Leonoudakis served as the 20th President of the Board of Directors and was the recipient of the coveted American
Public Transit Association Distinguished Service Award; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Leonoudakis played a pivotal role during the rail rapid transit debates in the 1960s; he initiated laws that returned passenger
ferry service between San Francisco and Southern & Central Marin and he was instrumental in the creation of a first -class bus system between
San Francisco, Marin, and Sonoma counties; he provided leadership as the District embarked on a Bridge maintenance program replacing the
original rivets, suspender ropes, Bridge deck and sidewalk in the 1970s and 1980s; he successfully installed FasTrak, an electronic toll collection
system, and began the monumental task to Seismic Retrofit the Bridge; and he spearheaded the issue of $61 million in commercial paper to
finance the Seismic work over the next decade; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Leonoudakis has contributed his vision, leadership, energy, ability, devotion and skilled articulation in serving in leadership roles
both in his career and his community; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park recognizes and honors Stephan C. Leonoudakis for his
diverse accomplishments and for the role model in leadership that he continues to set.
