2001/04/10 City Council Resolution (8)RESOLUTION NO. 2001- 76 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK OBSERVING Thursday, April 19, 2001 DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state- sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims — six million were murdered; Gypsies, the handicapped, Poles, and other groups were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national reasons; and WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and WHEREAS, we, the people of the City of Rohnert Park, should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against bigotry and tyranny and rededicate ourselves to the principles of equality and justice for all; and WHEREAS, a Day of Remembrance has been set aside for citizens to remember the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the Holocaust as well as to reflect upon our own need for tolerance by all peoples; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Rohnert Park that it supports the U.S. Act of Congress (Public Law 96 -388, October 7, 1980) and recognizes April 19, 2001 as Yom Ha- Shoah, the International Day of Remembrance for victims of the Holocaust.
