A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
PROCLAIMING
MAY, 2001
"FOSTER CARE AWARENESS MONTH"
WHEREAS, the family, serving as the primary source of love, identity, self- esteem, safety and support, is the very foundation of our communities and
our state; and
WHEREAS, there are over 122,000 children in California and more than 450 children in Sonoma County in foster care being provided with a safe,
secure, and stable home along with the compassion and nurture of a foster family; and
WHEREAS, foster families, who open their homes and hearts to children whose families are in crisis, play a vital role helping children and families heal
and reconnect and in launching children into successful adulthood; and
WHEREAS, there are over 25,000 youth each year who reach their 18'h birthday and "age out" of foster care, far too often unprepared and without the
ongoing support and care of caring adults, often ending up unemployed, homeless, and/or incarcerated; and
WHEREAS, the recently enacted John H. Chafee Foster Care Independence Program will provide increased federal funds to our state for improved
independent living activities such as job training, scholarships and rent support; and
WHEREAS, there are numerous individual
