2010/09/16 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes (3)ROHNERT PARK SENIOR CITIZEN'S ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES Thursday, September 16, 2010 Call to Order Chairman Sampson called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call Present: Deza, Hawker, Sampson. Absent: Marion Ackerman. Also present: Pam Stafford, Alternate City Council Liaison; Jessica Schieberl, Technical Director, Senior Center; Betty Tringali, Senior Center Staff. Approval of Minutes The minutes of the May 20th, 2010 meeting were approved as submitted. Posting of the Agenda Recreation Staff acknowledged that the agenda was posted as required by law in three public locations. Technical Advisor Report Jessica Schieberl reported that the Rohnert Park-Cotati Chapter of Realtors is helping to re -carpet the Senior Center. It will take about 695 new carpet squares. We are selling one square for $10. To date, we have donations totaling $240 toward the purchase of the new carpeting. Each person who donates will have their name on a plaque to hang in the drop-in area. As another fundraiser, we are selling Sees Candy for the Christmas Holidays. The Health Fair held on Sept. 11th was well-received. Approximately 300 people attended — there were 40 booths and Sutter Health gave shots for whooping cough. Zumba Gold classes started Friday September 17th at 10:00 a.m.; October 17th is the first open line dance social; October 30 is our Halloween Musical Extravaganza with a costume contest and raffles. Nov. 17th we have a trip to the DeYoung Museum; Dec. 4 is our Winter Tea and Dec. 14th is our annual Holiday party featuring our Vintage Choir. Our club membership now total 171 and we have 10 businesses signed up for discounts. Activities Reports: Senior Meals Programs — In Pam Schaeffer's absence, Jessica reported from June through August, the dining room delivered 4,413 meals and served 994 meals. SweetPea Gift Shoppe Jessica reported the Shoppe had 10 new consignors; they're training 3 new volunteers and currently have over 50 consignors. Parks & Recreation Commission Liaison Report – absent - no report. City Council Liaison Report – Pam Stafford discussed some commercial vacancy rental problems and trying to get new businesses here in Rohnert Park. She mentioned the Sonoma Mountain Village multi -land use general plan. This will include commercial, industrial and residential areas, which will allow for growth and gradual development. This may also include a Rialto Theater. The lighting of trees for Christmas will be done again this year and a tree was being donated to the library. A question was asked about the new lawsuit against the City concerning Wal-Mart. Pam explained what she knew about it but stated she had not yet read the entire suit. As far as Pacific Market's closing if Wa1Mart expansion takes place, Pacific Market is not making it now. Recreation Services Manager Report –absent – no report. Communications-- None Matters from Commissioners—Commissioner Hawker commented on the RSVP luncheon and how wonderful it was. Many raffle prizes. About 300 volunteers attended. Chairman Sampson announced the next meeting of the Commission would be held on January 20, 2011.
