2017/01/19 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission MinutesSENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, January 19, 2017 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date at Rohnert Park Senior Center, 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, Rohnert Park, for a regular meeting to commence at Loopm. Call to order Chair Sampson called the meeting to order at 1:03pm, the notice for which being legally noted on January 19, 2017. 1. Roll Call: Present: Elaine Sampson, Chair Loreen Abbott, Commissioner Caryl Sherman, Commissioner Absent: Cheryl Burton, Commissioner (excused absence) Nancy Garvey, Commissioner (excused absence) Staff Present: Cindy Bagley, Community Services Manager John McArthur, Director of Public Works and Community Services Hannah Deeter, Community Service Program Coordinator 2. Pledge of Allegiance: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Sampson. 3. Acknowledgment of Meeting Agenda Posting: The regular meeting agenda was posted at the required public places per the Brown Act requirements. 4. Approval of Minutes: With no objection or comments from the Commissioners, Chair Sampson approved the minutes from the September 15, 2016 regular meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission. 5. Peace Garden Update — Steve Elliott Member of the Rohnert Park/Cotati Rotary Club, Steve Elliott, shared the design boards for the upcoming Peace Garden at the Senior Center. THe project will begin once the City's re-roofmg and parking lot paving projects are completed. Hardy, weather resistant plants will be planted and a drip system will be included to maintain adequate watering. 6. Senior Center Report COmmunift Service% Coordinator Senior Center Program Coordinator, Deeter, reported recent activity updates. The SRJC Older Adult Program classes are now back on schedule since the Spring 2017 semester started Tuesday, January 171h The 8 week Matter of Balance program run by the County of Sonoma has a full class and has been going well. It's very possible another session will be scheduled for late summer or early fall. The AARP Tax Aide Foundation is scheduled to begin offering their free preparation service on Friday, Feburary 3`d at the Senior Center. Eagle Scout candidate, Jacob Slater, will be offering a program towards the end of March called "Simple Navigation of a Digital World" for those interested in learning how to use their laptop or smart phone. b. Dining Site Council on Aging dining site coordinator, Jason Whitworth, reported that since the last meeting in September of 2016, they have served 6,847 meals through the Meals and Wheels program. An average of 28 diners visit the Rohnert Park Senior Center dining room. Starting January 301h the Cafe Bistro program will begin. Lunches will made in house instead of pre-packaged and will be served from 11:00 am -1:00 pm. Multiple options will be provided for both those dining at the Senior Center and those having meals delivered to their home. 7. Parks and Recreation Commission Liaison Report: 8. City Council Liaison Report: Councilmember Belforte advised that the public not drive through standing water at any time. Also reported was the new development that has been approved and will be built west of Costco which will consist of a hotel, apartments as well as a retail component. The hotel is expected to be completed by April 2018. Belforte invited public and commissioners to the hot crab feed hosted by the Rohnert Park Chamber of Commerce on February 11 `h The Health Action Board invites the community to attend their meeting to share ideas on how to improve the health status of Rohnert Park and Cotati on Wednesday, January 25th. Belforte reported that the Rohnert Park Public Safety department has reported that crime is down by 23%. 9. Community Services Manager & Director Report: a. Community Services staff update Director of Public Works and Community Services John McArthur introduced Cindy Bagley as the new Community Services Manager. She started at the end of November 2016. b. Community Service Code of Conduct The Community Services department is working on revising a Code of Conduct for the Senior Center. This document will be used as a tool to encourage positive behavior at the Senior Center. c. Project updates a. Dishwasher & Drop -In Florring The scullery in the Senior Center kitchen is not up to code and needs to be replaced. This project will potentially begin in the next fiscal year. The carpeting in the drop-in area is also a future project that is being looked into. b. Senior Center Parking Lot, Sidewalks & Ramps Bids to renovate the parking lot, sideawlks and ramps at the Senior Center have been received and will be taken to City Council for approval. The esmitated date for this project start date would be early this spring. c. Roof The roof replacement project will also be happening hopefully this spring. d. Automatic Handicapped Door The addition of an automatic handicapped door on the activity room doors on the east side of the building is of high priority because of the potential safety issue involved in not having one installed. The project is estimated to cost $7,00048,000. 10. Communications No communications. 11. Public Comment Council on Aging volunteer expressed concern regarding the height of the dish sanitizer in the kitchen. 12.
