REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, April 18, 2019
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date at Rohnert
Park Senior Center, 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, Rohnert Park, for a regular meeting to
commence at 12:30pm.
1. SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION — CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair Sherman called the meeting to order at 12:30pm, the notice for which being noted on
April 12, 2019.

Absent: Cheryl Burton, Commissioner
Staff Present: Director of Public Works and Community Services McArthur, Deputy Director
of Community Services Bagley, Community Services Program Coordinator Foley.
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Sherman.
3. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MEETING AGENDA POSTING
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley, acknowledge posting of the regular
meeting agenda in the required places per Brown Act requirements.
4. Installment of New Commissioner
City Clerk Buergler installed Commissioner Phyllis Transue.
5. Brown Act Refresher
a. Staff report
City Clerk Buergler presented a reference guide of the Brown Act to new
commissioners and went over what the Brown Act entails.
6. Approval of Minutes
The minutes for the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission regular meeting on January 17,
2019 were approved on the condition changing the vote count from 4-0-1 to 3-0-2 and the
addition of noting that Commissioner Burton was late to the meeting. Vice Chair Abbott
made a motion to approve the minutes as amended and Commissioner Coffman Seconded.
The motion was carried with the following 3-1-1 vote.
7. Senior Center Report
a. Community Services Coordinator
i. BINGO Update
-Community Services Program Coordinator Foley reported Friends of the
Rohnert Park Senior Friday Night BINGO game has made $22,359.61
between January 2019 and April 2019.
ii. Council on Aging Dining Site Update
-Foley reported Council on Aging has been serving an average of 23 people
per day in the Senior Center dining room and they have been receiving an
average of $3.20 per person which is up from the previous $1.70 that was
reported at the January meeting.
iii. Age Friendly Community Program
-Foley reported Council on Aging has approached Rohnert Park and would
like to help the city become a certified Age Friendly City. Foley reported there
would be a focus group held at the Senior Center after the commission
meeting where seniors would get the opportunity to discuss Rohnert Park's
strengths and needs related to aging in the community. Foley requested two
commissioners to volunteer their time to partake in the focus group. Chair
Sherman and Commissioner Coffman volunteered.
iv. Senior Prom and Senior Trips Update
-Foley reported the Senior Citizen Prom was a success with 50 seniors in
attendance and the prom will hopefully become a yearly tradition.
- Foley reported 18 seniors went on the SMART train trip to San Rafael in
February and there is a full van of seniors signed up for the San Francisco Bay
Cruise in May. In June a trip is planned to go to Petaluma for a tour of Tara
Firma Farms and then out to lunch in Petaluma.
v. Senior Center Wellness Program
-Foley reported the Senior Center has partnered with Clear Water of Sonoma
Hills to do a yearlong wellness seminar series. The Senior Center will host a
wellness seminar once a month. Foley also announced there will be a Senior
Issues Forum hosted by Senator Bill Dodd on May 3rd from 10:00am-11:30am
at the Senior Center.
vi. Center Request Follow Ups
-Foley reported the Senior Center has purchased a white board for the Spanish
class and for seminars. At the last Senior Advisory meeting, it was requested
the computer lab be open in the afternoon. The lab is now open on Tuesdays
from 9am-3pm. A roundtable was acquired as requested.
8. Parks & Recreation Commission Liaison Report
-Chair Canterbury reported the SOMO village project is in the preliminary phase.
9. City Council Liaison Report
-Councilmember Adams reported that a COTS outreach worker has been serving Rohnert
Park. Adams also reported that the downtown plans were in design review and passed with a
5-0 vote. Adams reported the developer has plans to open in October of 2020.
10. Community Services Deputy Director & Director Report
a. Special Events
-Deputy Director Bagley, reported Bunfest was a successful event with 500 attendees.
- Bagley reported the next event Community Services will be hosting is Aqua Day In
May on May 4th from 12pm-4pm at Honeybee Park and pool.
- Bagley reported Rohnert Park's Got Talent event was a success.
-Bagley reported Party On The Plaza will be celebrating its 10th year. June 7th from
5pm-IOpm will be the kickoff event.
b. Senior Center Building Project Update
-Bagley reported the HVAC is complete and the roof and paint job will be wrapping
up soon.
- Commissioner Sherman requested the Senior Center be established as a cooling
center. Director of Community Services and Public Works McArthur, confirmed it
could be utilized as a cooling center.
- McArthur reported the lighting on the outside of the building will be bright LED
lighting and exterior cameras for extra security will be installed. McArthur also
reported the stained ceiling tiles will also be getting replaced.
11. Communications

12. PUBLIC COMMENTS
None
13. Matters to/from Commissioners
-Commissioner Coffman would like to add the drop-in room to the paint job project.
McArthur reported it is more extensive due to wall paper, but agreed it is needed.
- Chair Sherman reminded the commission about the new Summer Recreation Guide.
-Chair Sherman reported the library will be eliminating fines, and they are now providing hot
spots for free for two weeks.
- Chair Sherman shared she has volunteered her services to Cecily, the COTS outreach
worker, in regards to homelessness.
- Chair Sherman mentioned the pet wellness clinic will be taking place at the Senior Center
on Sunday, May 5th
-Chair Sherman brought up the Redwood Empire Food Bank and mentioned she would like
to thank them. Vice Chair Abbott suggested presenting them with a certificate of recognition.
Councilmember Adams suggested Chair Sherman bring the idea up to Mayor Belforte.
- Chair Sherman requested to have a picture of the commission.
14. Adjournment
There being no further business, Chair Sherman adjourned the regular meeting of the Senior
Citizen Advisory Commission at 1:40pm.
