DEPARTMENT Interoffice Memo
CAGIFORtifA
To: Carl Leivo, City Manager
From: Guy Miller, Recreation Services Manager
Date: 1/11/05
Cc: Recreation and Parks Commission, Sandy Lipitz, Recreation Staff
Subject: Monthly Report, December 2004
ADMINISTRATION
• The Community Center was closed the week after Christmas as a cost saving
measure. The heat was turned down and the multi-use room was painted. There
were no rentals that week and registrations are typically very slow during this
period. The Callinan Sports &Fitness Center was open for full operation and
any Recreation Department business was handled there.
• The floor replacement project for the Community Center Multi-use Room was
completed. The flooring product,Teraflex, is a synthetic wood-look polymer
which is 100%waterproof. The wood-grain surface was installed in a geometric
pattern which, according to the manufacturer, is unique. Photographs were taken
of the floor to be used in the company's future advertising media. Groups who
have utilized the room since the installation have given the surface rave reviews.
• The Parks and Recreation Commission Master Plan Committee had its first
meeting. A draft outline of the plan was created and the committee members
studied several Rec and Parks Master Plans from other cities.
• The"Class"recreation management software was upgraded to the latest version
and many of our workstations were also upgraded to Windows XP Pro. These
upgrades pave the way for the internet-based registration program that is
anticipated to be in place late 2005.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
• We held two one-week sessions of our Happy Holidays Day Camp during winter
break. The camp was held at Ladybug Recreation Building. There were 25
campers during the first session, and 23 for the second session. Campers enjoyed
cooking projects, games, sports, arts& crafts, movies and more. Total revenue
for the two weeks of camps was $4871.00. Total expense, including staffing, was
just over$3,000.00.
COMMUNITY GARDEN
• Wendy Audiss met with Jeff Lewin, Environmental Health Program Manager for
the County of Sonoma Department of Health Services, regarding the use of CCA
treated wood in the garden. They walked the garden and identified several pieces
of treated wood used as side boards in raised garden beds. Also, all of the tree
stakes that the City used to mark plot corners are treated wood. These will all
have to be removed, possibly along with the soil around the posts. More meetings
will be held to determine the number of soil samples to be taken. Wendy has also
met with Public Works to go over the removal of any contaminated soil. It is
hoped that the clean up of the toxins in the garden will be completed by April 1.
SENIOR CENTER
• We had our first Holiday Boutique on Friday, December 3, 2004. We had
WeekEnders, Discovery Toys, Party Lite, Mary Kay and Cookie Lee Jewelry set
up in our Activity Room. The room was decorated for Christmas, giving off a
very festive atmosphere. The distributors agreed to give the Center a percentage
of their sales. I was hoping the seniors could do some family Christmas shopping,
and City Employees might do the same on their lunch hour. Participation
(shoppers)numbers were very disappointing. However, we did receive $147.30
from the distributors.
• On December 8, Martha(Travel with Martha) scheduled a trip to McConaghy
House in Hayward. The McConaghy House is a Victorian farmhouse that has
been restored, furnished and decorated for Christmas as it might have been in
1885. After the tour of the house, the group had lunch before returning home.
All had a great time! Profit...$33.00.
• Variety Friday was held on the 12th. We had about 50 folks who enjoyed an
afternoon of great entertainment, along with some wonderful Christmas music. '1
We charged an admission fee of$1.00, and held a raffle...Profit$92.50.
• On the 17th' 35 folks participated in the Christmas Light Tour of San Francisco.
This was a Day Trip of which we partnered with"Travel with Friends"Bus
Company. We toured two S.F. Hotels to see the Christmas decorations, and then
were dropped off at Pier 39 for shopping and dinner. We left Pier 39 for a tour of
residential areas noted for their Christmas Decorations. We were served hot
cocoa or hot cider and ginger cookies before the return home. All of us had a
wonderful time and were very glad we had taken the trip. Profit...$250.00.
• We finished up the month with our annual Christmas Concert/Party. We had a
good turnout and the Concert was one of the best. Everyone enjoyed the sing-a-
long as we gave raffle prizes away between songs. Profit...$122.15.
CALLINAN SPORTS & FITNESS CENTER
• December is traditionally a slow month for the Sports Center. In December 03
we had a revenue of$22,793. This year we reported a total of$21,359. This is a
decrease in revenue of $1,434. The year to date totals looks a little better, yet
similar. Last year (July 1 — December 31, 03) we reported a total income of
$100,867. This year (July 1 —December 31, 04) we reported a total of$100,418.
The make-up of the membership is very similar to last year. There is not one type
of membership or pass that sold more/or less.
• We have started new program — Personal Fitness Training. We advertised in the
Voice several times in December and distributed flyers. We sold 6 Personal
Training Sessions so far—hopefully we get more people interested.
• CYO Basketball, RCHS Basketball and Apache Soccer are using the Sports
Center on a daily basis. CYO and Apache Soccer also use the Mt. Shadows
Middle School Gymnasium. So far no problems reported.
• We hired 3 new staff. They are in training now — hopefully we will be able to
retain them for a while.
