INTEROFFICE MEMO tg 62 To: Carl E. Leivo, City Manager Subject: Recreation Department Monthly Highlights From: Guy Miller, Recreation Services Manager COLI FORN11 Date: April 7, 2004 RECREATION ADMINISTRATION • The 2004 Spring/Summer Activity Guide was published this month. The guide has 48 pages of great recreation offerings including summer camps, aquatics, sports& fitness programs and much more. Several new classes are being offered this summer including Lego Engineering Camps, Financial Workshops, Fencing Camp, Soccer Camps, Teen Clay, Beginning Pop/Rock Guitar, Rubber Stamping, CPR, and some additional yoga classes. The guide was delivered to 14,000 residences in Rohnert Park and Cotati. • Representing the Recreation Department, Donna Abeln and Jan Geffre(local dignitaries) were asked to throw out the first ball on opening day for the Rohnert Park Girls Softball League. A large crowd was on hand at Honeybee Park for the opening day festivities. After the toss, league representatives thanked Donna and Jan and gave them each a dozen roses for their help each year. • The Community Center beam renovation project was put out to bid and favorable ,. bids were received. The project is expected to begin mid-May. During the construction, the Recreation Department offices will be moved to the rear of the Community Center and the public will be routed away from the construction area. Construction is expected to last about two months. • Residents of M-Section have voiced complaints about the Rohnert Park Tennis Club's use of the courts at Magnolia Park. Some of the residents feel that tennis club is monopolizing the courts during the prime time. Some of the complaints were due to misinformation and it was unclear to the residents that courts are almost always available for open play. The tennis club has posted their schedule and the residents were contacted to clear up any misinformation. At this point, it appears that most are satisfied. • There are still conflicts between baseball leagues and the Best Friends Canine Club over the use of G-Park. The baseball leagues have complained of dog feces on the field and felt the dog club was responsible. The dog club, which only uses the field for one hour each day,has been diligent about cleaning up after themselves and feels that the feces are a result of the general public running their dogs during the day, outside of the authorized hours of use. Both groups are talking to each other and staff, trying to resolve the issue. Hopefully, once the Roberts Lake Dog Park is complete the problem will subside. • Wendy Audiss and Maya van den Heuvel attended the California and Pacific Southwest Park and Recreation Training Conference March 10-13 in Anaheim. They attended sessions on communication, supervision, staff motivation, outdoor play, and a variety of other subjects. This conference provides not only excellent Page 1 of 4 training/educational seminars, but also opportunities to network with recreational -- professionals and equipment vendors. • Park, picnic, field and tennis court uses booked in March= 740,revenue$510. Picnic and youth field reservations for 2004 began in March. • Total bookings at Community Center, Burton, Ladybug and Scout Hut buildings for March= 125, rental revenue= $5,616 • Program revenue(contract classes &Rec. Dept.programs, excluding Aquatics) = 526 registrations totaling$41,536.87. Registration for swim classes began the week of March 22nd. We had 71 registrations for a total of$4,082. YOUTH PROGRAMS • The annual summer camp sign-up day was held on Saturday, March 6. Fourteen children were signed up for a total of 69 camp sessions. Of these, only 9 children were registered for the entire summer. This is considerably less than was signed up during the Saturday registration day last year. • We are only offering 5 camps this summer: Burton Bunch, Ladybug Club, All Around the Town, All Sorts of Sports, and Teen Camp. Last year very few of our camp sessions filled, so we are consolidating for this summer. • Applications are being turned in for summer camp staff. Advertisements are on file at SRJC and SSU. We also have many of last year's camp staff returning. • The Recreation Department's summer brochure cover featured a photo of our '1 after school program participants. The kids love having their picture on the brochure! • A Teen Concert was held at Burton Avenue Rec. Center on Friday, March 19. Four bands played for approximately 60 teenagers. Admission was $6, and revenue covered all expenses. The next concert is scheduled for April 16. CALLINAN SPORTS & FITNESS CENTER • Membership sales totals were$38,017 March '04 compared to $31,438 for the same period last year. This is good news in light of last month's drop in sales. Year-to-date,we are still behind $8,000 compared to last year, but this only represents a decline of 3%. Membership sales are expected to exceed budget estimates by approximately$10,000. • We were host to the Hawaiian International Martial Arts Nationals on March 19- 20. Several hundred competitors from around the nation participated and stayed in the local hotels. • Staff members visited the International Health, Racquet, and Sports Club Association annual show to research the latest in exercise equipment and trends. We hope to purchase badly needed new equipment in the near future. • The Winning Edge Sports Training program is becoming very successful. Trainer Gregg Adams is doing a fantastic job bringing high school aged athletes from all '1 over the county to the Callinan Center for sport-specific training. This program is Page 2 of 4 in partnership with the Recreation Department and has generated over$3500 in revenue for the city. SENIOR CENTER • AARP Tax Preparation Service is providing tax services to low-to-moderate- income individuals every Friday. Two hundred and fifty folks have participated in the program. AARP is asking for a$10.00 donation for services rendered. They collected $636 as of the 19th of March. They gave that money to the Senior Center. The Center staff couldn't be more thrilled. • Fund-Raiser Committee Meeting met for the first time to discuss future fund- raising efforts for the Center. We had nine enthusiastic ladies coming up with some great fund-raisers. Thirteen new events were suggested and discussed. The goal is to conduct a fund-raiser twice a month. The next meeting is scheduled for April 9th. • Twin Pines Casino Day Trip was another success. We had 46 seniors participate. The trip made a profit of$245.20. • Private Computer Lessons began with our volunteer SSU student Karina Pinon. She is a graduating senior at Sonoma State and, for her last project as an undergraduate; she wanted to teach Computer skills to seniors. We will be offering three Computer Classes, Introduction to Computers, Intermediate and Advanced. The lessons will be private and are available with a choice of one '/2 hour or hour lessons. The cost for lessons will be, $5.00 for one V2 hour and 10.00 for one hour. We have four seniors signed up at this time. • Tripping With Martha took three vans of seniors on a Day Trip. They toured the Jelly Belly Factory, and lunched at the Jelly Belly Café. After lunch they took a tour at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. After expenses the trip profited $118.00. • Staff is pleased to announce, we will add three new advertisers to our monthly newsletter. Springfield Place, a Senior Retirement Community located in Petaluma, Kathleen L. Murry, Attorney at Law, located in Petaluma and Action Fitness,Personal Training&Gym for Women, located in Rohnert Park. Advertisers pay$125.00 for six months. The fee collected for ads was $375.00. On the Horizon... • Conversation is a natural way human beings communicate and learn from each other. Yet, these days we rarely have time to sit together and talk. With this in mind,we want to start the Chat Corner. This group will meet on Tuesdays from 10:30a.m. - 12:00p.m. • With the help of Debbie Schwanke we will be offering a Stamping Workshop. In the class the seniors will learn how to make cards, create gift-wrapping and stationery. They can organize their grandchildren's pictures in learning how to scrap-book pages. A demonstration class is scheduled for Tuesday April 20 at 3:00p.m. Page 3 of 4 ADULT SPORTS - • We registered 42 slo-pitch softball teams for this summer, playing in 7 different leagues. This represents about 650 players. All games will be played at either Sunrise Park or Magnolia Park. We are currently recruiting scorekeepers and facility attendants to make these leagues a success. Game play will start the first week of May. • The spring basketball league is well underway with seven teams playing a double round robin schedule at the Mt. Shadows Middle School.
