ADMINISTRATION
• Met with Community Garden participants to organize a new Board of Directors.
The past board members have all moved away and a new board is needed. Several
gardeners volunteered to be on the board.
• The Community Center truss renovation is scheduled to begin May 24. The pre-
construction meeting was held and plans for moving the Recreation Department
offices are underway.
• It appears that the use conflicts at Magnolia Park tennis courts have subsided for
the moment. A representative from the Rohnert Park Tennis Club made a
presentation at the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting and gave a brief
overview of their program and history with the Recreation Department. The
residents who complained about not having enough court time were invited to
attend the meeting, but did not. The Commission agreed with the Recreation
Services Manager assessment of the situation and solution.
• A brief presentation was made to the City Council regarding facility and program
fees for Recreation. We are recommending several fee increases to offset
increased operating expenses.
• A meeting was held with representatives from the Early Learning Institute and
First Five Sonoma County to evaluate the Child Care Voucher Program. This
program provides funds for children to participate in recreation opportunities in
Rohnert Park. The program was a success last year with over 25 providers
participating. Most of the providers purchased swim passes for their children.
• Arson and vandalism continue to plague us. Burton Avenue Recreation center was
vandalized on Easter weekend. Several windows were smashed out and a fire was
started in the kitchen. With the help of REMIF, Public Works, and Recreation
Department personnel, the building was made ready for a wedding reception
within a week of the incident.
• Park, picnic, field and tennis court uses booked in April = 733, revenue $1,650.
• Total bookings at Community Center, Burton, Ladybug and Scout Hut buildings
for April= 101,rental revenue= $6,946
• Program revenue(contract classes &Rec. Dept. programs, excluding Aquatics)=
623 registrations totaling $53,283.50. In addition, we accepted 193 swim
registrations for spring and summer lessons totaling$6,834.
SENIOR CENTER
• April 9...was the last day for AARP Tax Preparation Service. This service was
providing tax services to low-to-moderate-income individuals every Friday.
AARP was suggesting a $10.00 donation for services rendered. During the tax
season they collected $948.00. They gave that money to the Senior Center. A
thank you letter from the Center's staff and a letter from the Mayor are on the way
to the dedicated and generous volunteers of this program!
• April 16...the first Bingo Party and Hot Dog Day this year was held. We had a
wonderful turnout, approximately 70 participants. Along with bingo we
conducted a raffle, and gave away some great prizes! During the bingo break we
served lunch. It appeared that all bingo players bought a Hot Dog lunch. We
also had some non-bingo players coming in for Hot Dogs. With the two events
combined, we netted $691.23.
• April 8 & 17...Tripping With Martha offered two day trips to the month's
activities. The first one was to the Asian Art Museum and Coit Tower. The
second trip was to the Oakland Paramount Theatre and a visit to Jack London
Square. We had a total of 30 Participants. The profit for the trips was, $126.00..
• April 13...Shodakai Indian Casino Day Trip was another success. We had 50
seniors participate. The trip made a profit of$241.00.
• April 20...the free Stamping Workshop was held. We had a good turnout for the
demonstration. Debbie Schwanke demonstrated some quick and easy projects.
Then, each senior was able pick a project and have it completed before the end of
class. From that demonstration, we have nine folks sign up for the next class.
Therefore, we will offer a Stamping Workshop every second Tuesday of the
month.
• April 21...we had another Living Trust Seminar sponsored by American Family
Legal Centers. We collect a fee of$125.00 for these informational seminars.
This company had a seminar back in January of'04. The last seminar they held
had such a good attendance they decided to do another. This seminar also was
well attended.
• Private Computer Lessons continue. We had three new students. We collected
$30.00 for the classes
• Gem of a Getaway Cruise has 53 seniors signed up! The center makes $50.00 per
sign up. The cruise is in September; we'll see what the outcome is then.
YOUTH ACITVITIES
• The after school program enjoyed a visit to the animal shelter on April 6. The
children learned about taking care of animals, and they got to meet several cats,
dogs,bunnies, guinea pigs and rats.
• Our Swinging Spring Camp at Ladybug Rec. Building had over 40 children
enrolled for the week. They had two field trips—the animal shelter, and Mary's
Pizza Shack. They also participated in games and arts and crafts. We had one
instance of a camper who ran away from the campsite, but staff and Public Safety
handled the situation.
• Interviews were held throughout the month of April for summer camp staff. We
had many well-qualified people apply. We will be hiring ten new people, and we
have seventeen staff returning from last summer.
• We had to cancel a teen concert in April because Burton Avenue Rec. Center had
been vandalized. Some equipment was used to start a fire in the kitchen.
Fortunately, it was a broken speaker. Since the fire was quickly extinguished by
the fire suppression system, it only took a week to put the building back in order.
Besides breaking may windows and doors, the vandals also destroyed the vcr and
video game system in the after school program room, and stole some telephones.
CALLINAN SPORTS & FITNESS CENTER
• Membership totals were $23,444 for April 2004, compared to $23,217 for the
same period last year. Year-to-date, we are behind $10,000 compared to last year.
• We hope to generate a significant increase in sales for the month of May with a
new membership type. We are now offering a Swim/Gym Pass. This
membership enables annual members (single and family memberships) the
opportunity to purchase a Summer Season Pool Pass for an additional fee. The
Summer Season Pass is good for all Lap Swim, Recreational Swim, and Family
Swim sessions from now through September 6. We placed an ad in The Voice and
have had many phone calls to inquire about this special.
• Word has gone out that we are in the process of purchasing new Fitness Room
equipment (treadmills, bikes, weight machines, etc.) Staff has met with several
major vendors and plans are forming to give the Free Weight Room and Fitness
Room a well-deserved facelift. There is a lot of new and exciting equipment and
it will be a fun challenge to come up with the best we can afford.
• We are hosting 3 basketball tournaments (April, May, June) for the Girls North
Bay Shootout Series. We are using both the Mountain Shadows Middle School
and the Sports Center for these tournaments. The rental fee total for these events
will be around $2,000.
• The Sports Center parking lot has been hit several times this past month by car
burglars.
• Each time Public Safety responded but the culprits were long gone. This has been
an ongoing problem and we are afraid it is affecting our customers. Staff will ask
Public Safety to increase patrol in the area and maybe set up a sting situation to
catch the thieves.
• We are experiencing an almost complete staff turnover because most part timers
are either graduating or going home for the summer. At this point we have hired
several new staff and are in the process of getting them trained.
ADULT SPORTS
• Our Summer Softball Leagues started on May 3. We are now playing at Sunrise
Park and Magnolia Park, since Benicia Park was turned over to Little League
Baseball. Magnolia Park has now two softball fields. Several nights a week both
fields are used by adult softball. After a rocky start (the base anchors were not
placed in the right position at the new field), things seem to be going ok. A
neighbor complained about the foul language used by ball players and the trash
left behind. We have sent a letter to all managers to encourage players not to use
alcohol, foul language (a lot of players do bring their families to the game) and to
pick up all trash that their group left behind. It is our understanding that there is
no park cleanup until the Monday after the weekend. We asked Public Works to
correct that problem.
• Our spring basketball league is now halfway through the season with very little
problems. All games are played at the Mt Shadows Middle School.
