Recreation Services Manager Date: 10/13/04 ADMINISTRATION • The Adopt-A-Park Program was approved by City Council on October 12. The program will commence after the first of the year. • The Community Cenfer Floor renovation contract was awarded to MA Davies Builders in San Rafael. The low bid was $99,728, which includes the two bid alternatives of the storage areas and stage area. There is $141,000 available through the Housing/Jobs Balance Grant for this project, however there are two additional projects to be funded from this grant. The resurfacing of Alicia Park tennis courts and the replacement of Ladybug Park playground equipment. There will not be adequate funds for both projects to be completed. A decision will have to be made regarding which project to fund. • The Rohnert Park Tennis Club has offered to pay$5000 towards the cost of resurfacing Magnolia Park tennis courts. We are in the process of acquiring informal quotes for this job. If the cost is not too far over the donation amount we will consider this project. • We had a major power surge at the Burton Avenue Recreation Center that overloaded the ballasts for almost all the light fixtures. The main circuit breaker and all the ballasts had to be replaced. With the expert assistance of Public Works, this job was completed in time to open the center for a weekend event. • We are working with the University of Sports to create a partnership where their members would have access to our swimming pools. The University of Sports will pay a per-person fee for the use of our swimming pools. This is a mutually beneficial partnership. Details are forthcoming. • We are currently in negotiations with the School District over the joint use agreement. At a recent meeting, district representatives expressed concern over the overuse of their fields by community groups. Solutions will be presented in the Joint Use agreement to address these concerns. The district may choose to establish use fees for the local sports groups to help offset the cost of maintaining fields. Until the agreement is finalized, the district and city will continue to abide by the previous agreement. CALLINAN SPORTS & FITNESS CENTER • Our members are ecstatic that the new cardio equipment arrived. We now have 10 brand new treadmills, 4 new recumbent bikes. 4 new upright bikes and 4 new elliptical runners. We are in the process of putting together a plan to purchase weight room equipment. Hopefully we can also change the floor in the Free Weight Room and add entertainment equipment. • We hosted a one day Karate Tournament. We had around 700 visitors/participants. • The gymnasium floor and the racquetball courts have been refinished. We are ready for the winter season. CYO, RCHS Basketball and Indoor Soccer will be starting the end of October. • Maintenance of the Sports Center remains a great concern for us. Public Works has been trying hard to keep up with all the requests to fix broken items. Our building is getting older and so are all mechanical components (showers, boilers, heating etc). Paint, carpets, locker room walls and lockers are worn. We report anywhere between 9000 and 11000 visits per month. We will have to come up with a plan how we are going to deal with these items. YOUTH PROGRAMS: • Our after school program at Ladybug Park currently has 18 participants. The children are kept busy with homework, outside play, games, movies and cooking projects. CONTRACT CLASSES • Program Proposal packets were mailed out to current and new contract instructors, and we have been receiving several proposals each day. Wendy has '1 had meetings with new instructors interested in teaching various classes, including drawing for preschool-middle school, and Creative Memories (scrapbooking). ARTS & CRAFT FAIRE • To date we have 29 booth spaces rented out for the November 27-28 Arts & Crafts Faire. New this year we have free massages, and Nan's Heavenly Hot fudge(free samples!). We still have our fingers crossed that the new flooring will be in by Thanksgiving. SENIOR CENTER • Auditions for the Variety Show were held on Friday, September 3rd and Saturday, September 4th. After the auditions, we were pleaded to invite four new performers to join our cast of talented seniors. Rehearsals will begin in October. Tickets for the show wenton sale September 7th • We had our Document Party for our Annual Center Cruise on Monday, September 13th. We handed out cruise packets to 48 happy folks! Kris Adams from Golden Gate Tours and Vicki answered questions about the ship, excursions and transportation to and from the ship. A party followed with food and drinks. • September 14th we had a trip to Twin Pines Casino. There were a total number of 38 passengers on the bus. Profit was...$116.80. • • Hot Dog Friday was held on September 17th. Profit...$93.75. • A day trip to the San Francisco Farmer's Market had 33 people participate. The group took the Larkspur Ferry to the City. Everyone had such a great time; Martha Waller our volunteer day trip coordinator, decided to plan the same trip next summer. Profit...$140.00. • Our Cruise on the"Sapphire"Princess departed from San Francisco on Wednesday, September 22. We hit five ports on an 11-day cruise. We returned home on Saturday, October 2nd. We had a great time, and are looking forward to our 2005 Cruise to Hawaii. Profit...$2360.00.
