ADMINISTRATION
• Completed the Joint Use Agreement with CRPUSD. There is a lack of agreement
on the subject of holding the city responsible for necessary repairs and wear and
team of the athletic fields caused by third-party users. The district feels that since
the city schedules these groups on school fields, the city should be responsible for
the maintenance and repair of the fields. The city disagrees. We believe that we
are acting as an agent of the school district, and should not be held responsible for
their fields, since all we do is schedule play. We have a meeting with the district
in January and I'm sure this problem can be worked out.
n
• The Community Center Multi-Use Room floor was replaced and looks wonderful.
The original architect selected a synthetic surface, which is impervious to water.
The floor has the look and feel of real wood, but is completely waterproof. The
floor was christened when we held the Arts and Crafts Faire in this room
Thanksgiving weekend.
• We are in the process of evaluating the fees charged to groups using the city's
athletic fields. The price of utilities continues to rise and the fields are now being
used well into the darker winter months. An evaluation is being done and a
recommendation will be presented to the Recreation and Parks Commission in
January.
• The Roberts Lake Dog Park(Rohnert Bark Park?) was approved by Council. The
project will be put out to bid in January. A committee of interested dog owners
will be formed to help create the policies of the park and make design
suggestions.
• The Parks and Recreation Commission was presented with plans for the Specific
Plan Areas. Commission approval is needed for the land dedications of park sites
and acreage. The Commission requested additional information and a tour of the
plan areas.
• Work was finished on the Department's Spring/Winter activity guide and it was
sent to the publisher. Several new classes will be offered including cooking,
scrapbooking, Young Rembrandts'drawing and cartooning, buying and
maintaining your computer, college planning tips, and women's personal safety
and awareness training. The guide will be mailed to Rohnert Park residents the
week of December 13th.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
• The after school program held a full day program on Thursday,November 11
(Veterans' Day). There were 11 children in attendance. They made chocolate
chip pancakes for breakfast, and pizza for lunch. (We currently have 19 children
enrolled in our after school program at Ladybug Recreation Building.)
VETERANS' DAY CELEBRATION
• Thursday,November 11 we held our annual Veterans' Day Celebration in the
Sports and.Fitness Center. The Community Band once again played marches and
patriotic music. Councilmember Jake Mackenzie welcomed the crowd of
approximately 90 people, and Boy Scout Troop 431 presented the colors. Steve
Donley was our guest speaker and spoke about"Handing the Torch Over to the
Next Generation: Veterans Outreaching to Youth." Afterwards, Gateway
Christian Church served cookies, coffee and tea, and Girl Scout Troop 135
performed a flag retirement ceremony in the courtyard. There was one incident
during the event, when a man in the audience stood up and gave a speech
denouncing the current administration. He failed to quiet down when approached --
by Wendy Audiss, but was escorted out of the building without incident by
Armando Flores,Tom Martinez, and another gentleman in the audience.
ARTS & CRAFTS FAIRE
• The Faire was very successful despite the fact that we had approximately 20
fewer vendors than last year. The vendors I spoke will were all very happy with
the amount of sales for the weekend, with Saturday being a very strong sales day.
I conferred with several vendors about changes for the future, and they agreed that
changing the dates of the faire to a Friday afternoon—all day Saturday event
would probably increase sales. Several vendors volunteered to take fliers to
vendors at upcoming fairs, encouraging them to get on our mailing list and to take
part in next year's faire. This year an SCA soccer team ran the concession stand
as a fundraiser. This was a good option for us, as it was virtually impossible to
find recreation department staff to work over the holiday weekend. Our revenue
for the weekend was $3,574.00. Our expenses for advertising, entertainment and
decorations were$1,981.24.
SENIOR PROGRAMS
• The month began with our Award Winning Senior Variety Show. The show was
held on Saturday,November 6th. The theme for this year was, "Let's
Go...Hollywood". We sold over 350 tickets. However, our goal is to fill the
theatre, anything short of that is disappointing. The show was fabulous (as usual),
and the audience was wonderful! Great reviews were given to the performers as
the audience filed out of the theatre. Our expenses remain high; the largest one is
our theatre costs. Profit for the event...$1,174.58
• On November 9th we had a trip to Shodakai Casino. There were a total number of
45 passengers on the bus. The profit was...$183.00. We have reached the end of
our season for Casino trips. We begin again Tuesday, January 11th. Total profit
from 2004 was...$1,896.20.
• On November 19th we held a Bingo Party. Betty collected numerous Bingo prizes
and held a raffle. All had great fun! Profit...$432.50.
• Hot Dog Friday was held the same day. Bingo players took a break to have
lunch; play continued after the break. A few city employees joined us, including
our City Manager. Thank you Carl. Profit...$66.13.
• Reverend Tharpe held his Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at our Center. Many of
our seniors participated. I can't tell you how much the seniors enjoyed having
that very special event here. Also, Jim Curto, owner of the two McDonalds in our
community, met with me to offer a free breakfast for the seniors on Thanksgiving
morning. He gave us 150 invitations for a private 9:00am seating for seniors. I
received numerous positive comments on how lovely the meal was and how great
the folks were treated. A thank you letter from the center has been sent, and we
will request one from the mayor.
• On the 30th, Martha scheduled a trip to the Santa Rosa Mall for some pre-
Christmas shopping. Martha was disappointed in the response; however the
ladies who went seemed to enjoy it and were very grateful for the service.
Profit...$5.00.
CALLINAN SPORTS & FITNESS CENTER
• In November we increased our total membership revenue over last year with a
total of $6,253. We started our membership specials a bit earlier this year and
sold already 14 specials more (for an increase of $3,605). We also saw in
increase in senior memberships (18 more than last November for in increase of
$805). Adult memberships seem to be holding steady. In total we sold 203
memberships compared to 151 last year (an increase of 52). The year to date
picture holds pretty steady. Last year we had revenue of$79,479 —this year will
totaled $80,131. This is an increase of$652.
• We are starting up a new-program — Personal Fitness Training. We are excited
about it— it is good timing with the holidays approaching. Hopefully we will be
able to retain these new customers.
• CYO Basketball, RCHS Basketball and Apache Soccer are now in full swing at
the Sports Center. CYO and Apache Soccer also use the Mt. Shadows Middle
School Gymnasium. So far everything has been running smoothly with few staff
problems.
