SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Thursday, October 17, 2019
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date at Rohnert
Park Senior Center, 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, Rohnert Park, for a regular meeting to
commence at 12:30 p.m.
1. SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION—CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chair Sherman called the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m.
Present: Caryl Sherman, Chair
Lorrie Abbott, Vice Chair
Gary Coffman, Commissioner
Absent: Cheryl Burton, Commissioner,
Phyllis Transue, Commissioner
Staff Present: Don Schwartz, Assistant City Manager
Cindy Bagley, Deputy Director of Community Services
Amanda Foley, Community Services Program Coordinator
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The pledge of allegiance was led by Vice Chair Abbott.
3. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MEETING AGENDA POSTING
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley acknowledged the posting of the regular
meeting agenda in the required places per Brown Act requirements.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Action: Moved/Second (Abbott/Coffman) to approve the meeting minutes of the regular
meeting of July 18, 2019. The motion was carried with the following 3-0-0-2 vote:
AYES: Abbott, Coffman, Sherman; NOS: None; ABSTAINS: None; ABSENT: Burton,
Transue.
5. ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER UPDATE
Assistant City Manager, Don Schwartz, gave updates on the improvements that have taken
place at the Senior Center over the past year and also gave updates about affordable housing
in Rohnert Park.
6. SENIOR CENTER REPORT
a. Community Services Coordinator
i. BINGO Update
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley reported since the July 18
meeting, Bingo has brought in $25,061.

ii. Council on Aging Dining Site Update
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley reported Council on Aging has
been serving an average of 20 people per day in the Senior Center dining room
and they have been receiving an average of$1.27 per person.
iii. Senior Trips Update
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley reported since the last meeting
in July, seniors have enjoyed trips to the Sonoma County Fair in August, and a
trip to the Buck Institute of Research and Aging in October. The next trip will
take place in December and will be to Montgomery Village for holiday shopping.
iv. Upcoming Seminars
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley provided updates on the
following upcoming seminars:
November: Discouraged to Encouraged
December: Home Your Own Way
January: Clearing Clutter
v. Age Friendly Community Program Update
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley reported another focus group
was held in August. The walking audit has been pushed to the end of October and
they have enlisted help from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission as well as
two Rotary clubs.
vi. 4 Paws Update
Community Services Program Coordinator Foley reported 4Paws will be bringing
therapy dogs to the Senior Center on Friday, December 6. The therapy dogs will
come to the Senior Center for 1 hour and will be in the activity room.
7. PARKS&RECREATION COMMISSION LIAISON REPORT
Chair Canterbury reported Magnolia Park will be getting a new playground.
8. CITY COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT
Councilmember Adams reported Rohnert Park has passed a complete ban on synthetic
pesticides.
9. COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPUTY DIRECTOR& DIRECTOR REPORT
a. Building/Projects Update
Community Services Program Coordinator, Foley provided an update about the new
flooring and painting that will be taking place in the Senior Center dining room.
b. Special Events
Deputy Director Bagley announced Community Services will be hosting the second
annual Halloween Carnival at the Community Center on October 26. Deputy Director
Bagley also announced Community Services will be hosting the 40th annual Holiday
Arts and Crafts Faire at the Community Center on November 29 and 30.
10. COMMUNICATIONS
Vice Chair Abbott shared information about a 30-year bond regarding the school districts.
Councilmember Adams suggested having concerned citizens go to a school board meeting.

11. PUBLIC COMMENTS
a. Harvey Atkins expressed interest in finding out how he can find out when events such
as the Senior Advisory meetings take place.
b. Wynne Wilson shared she would like the city to keep ADA concerns in mind such as
sidewalks and the accessibility of walkers and canes.
12. MATTERS TO/FROM COMMISSIONERS
Chair Sherman requested help with publicizing flyers for the January meeting. Chair Sherman
shared the library will be hosting a round table discussion about cannabis and a world traveler
book club.
13. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, Chair Sherman adjourned the regular meeting of the Senior
Citizen Advisory Commission at 1:33 p.m.
