A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROHNERT PARK
CONDEMING RACISM,REASSERTING THE CITY 'S COMMITMENT TO SERVING
THE RESIDENTS OF ROHNERT PARK REGARDLESS OF RACE OR
BACKGROUND AND COMMITTING TO THE "MY BROTHER'S KEEPER"
INITIATIVE FOR REVIEW OF POLICE USE OF FORCE POLICIES
WHEREAS,our country is founded on the principle that all people have a fundamental
right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness; and
WHEREAS, the City of Rohnert Park is a diverse community interested in even- handed
and fair treatment of all persons under the law, including in the interactions among residents and
law enforcement; and
WHEREAS,on May 25, 2020, Mr. George Floyd, an African American man, was killed
by a Minneapolis police officer through the use of excessive force and indifference, which we
condemn;and
WHEREAS,this and numerous prior similar incidents demonstrate a need for
fundamental change in our society; and
WHEREAS, in the pursuit of happiness, people of color experience different outcomes
in terms of health, financial security, and homelessness, in addition to disparate treatment by law
enforcement; and
WHEREAS,the current pandemic has limited opportunities for public input and
discussion regarding the disparities faced by people of color; and
WHEREAS, listening and understanding are essential to developing actions to overcome
disparities in our City; and
WHEREAS, on June 10, 2020, the Mayor made President Obama's My Brother's Keeper
commitment to review our police use of force policies; engage our community by including a
diverse range of input, experiences, and stories in our review; report the findings of our review to
our community and seek feedback; and reform our community's police use of force policies.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Rohnert Park that the City condemns racism in all its forms and finds there is no place for
racial discrimination—intended or unintended—in our community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City pledges its commitment to the My
Brother's Keeper process to review and reform police use of force policies.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City commits to establishing a public
process to better understand inequities within the community and reaffirms its commitment to
equality for all people in the administration of its laws and provision of services.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City commits to listen to the experiences and
stories from our residents regarding policies and practices in the City which contribute to
inequality, disparate treatment, or inequity for our residents.
