ROHNERT PARK PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES
May 18, 1998
The Rohnert Park Parks and Recreation Commission met this date at 7:30 p.m. for a regular meeting at
the Rohnert Park city offices, 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park. The meeting was called to
order at 7:30 p.m. with Chair Stevens presiding and leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL Present: (5) Commissioners Allred, Carlson, Griffin, Stevens, and Tatman
Absent: (0)
Also present for the entire meeting was Interim Director of Recreation, Ron
Mikalis.
APPROVAL
OF MINUTES The minutes of April 20, 1998, were corrected to show that Commissioner Tatman
was present at the meeting and Commissioner Carlson was absent. Upon motion
by Commissioner Tatman and second by Commissioner Griffin, the corrected
minutes of the regular meeting of April 20, 1998, were unanimously approved as
submitted.
REQUEST FOR
FUNDS The Request for Community Funds for Scott Potter to help offset the costs of his
attending the Texas Rangers Baseball Academy was discussed. His father, Steven
A. Potter, 1153 Santa Cruz Way, attended the meeting to answer any questions
the Commission might have.
After discussion, a motion to recommend giving the Potter family $500 from
community funds was made by Commissioner Griffin. The motion was seconded
by Commissioner Allred and unanimously approved. The Commission requested
that the follow-up report be submitted by the Potters within 3 months after Scott
participates in the event.
BICYCLE
COMMITTEE Commissioner Griffin advised the city is still working on a bicycle master plan. He
also noted that May 19th is 'Bike to Work Day."
REPORTS FROM
THE DIRECTOR
OF RECREATION
Monthly Reports Interim Director Mikalis said he had nothing to add to the monthly reports for the
Community Center, Sports Center, or Senior Center.

Art in the Community
Center Lobby Director Mikalis advised that June 18th will be the first date that art will be hung in
the Community Center lobby with a reception for the artists in the afternoon.
Recruitment for
Recreation Director Director Mikalis reported that interviews for the Recreation Director opening will
be held on May 26th.
MATTERS FROM OR FOR
COMMISSIONERS
Facility Priority
List The Commission discussed the Recreation Facility Priorities list and decided to
delay the development of a skateboard park (item #6) and deleted the sand
volleyball courts at the Sports Center (item #3).
A determination of the aquatics projects: M Park outdoor swim center (item #9),
the indoor lap/recreation pool at the Sports Center (item 411) and outdoor 50
meter swim pool (item # 13) will be made after the city hears recommendations
made by a consultant.
Those priorities which have been completed were removed from the list: complete
M Park turf (item # 1) and installation of the tennis courts at M Park (items #5 &
7).
Commissioner Tatman recommended adding the modernization of the playground
equipment at Alicia and Benicia Parks as a priority in the one to five year category.
Following discussion the commission agreed.
Girls Softball League The Commission requested that the Girl's Softball League be contacted to let them
know that the league's light fees could be doubled next year if they don't meet the
National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) coaching certification
minimum requirements set by the Commission since it would be the second year in
a row.
Brick Memorial Commissioner Griffin noted that he had observed water damage to the bricks at
the Roberts Lake Brick Memorial.
School Playgrounds Commissioner Griffin said he was concerned about the fencing in of school
playgrounds by the school district and how it could affect the joint use agreement
the city has with the school district.
ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m. to a bus tour
of city facilities leaving City Hall, 6750 Commerce Boulevard, at 5 p.m. on
