1961/03/07 Other Minutes ROHNSRT PARK RECRFJATION CC,-21ISTICN Minutes for March 7th, 1961 Meeting On March 7th, 1961, at 7:30 p.m. , the Rohnert Park Recreation Commission met at the home of Nancy Thiesfeld with all members present. The meeting was opened with the reading of the minutes of the last meeting by the secretary. An addition to 'the minutes was made due to the omission of the kite contest sponsored by the Recreation Commission. Mr. W. Ray Miller was guest at the meeting and discussion was held with him regarding the functional co-existence of the park and school sites. :'a. Miller was asked by the Commission if the community would be able to use the school building for recreational and social functions. Mr. Miller advised that the school would be available for public functions subject to approval by the board of trustees. rir. Miller expressed the desire to use the swimming pool in his physical education program and the Commission felt that this could be worked out when the need arose. Discussion was held regarding the park's play area being located in conjunction with the school's pby area and the types of ecuipment to be used in both areas. rurther study of the proposed equipment will be made in the future by the Commission when that area of the park is put into effect. The matter of a fence down the property line between the park and school was dis- cussed. Mr. Miller stated that he hoped there would be no need . for such a fence as said fence would hinder interchangeable uses of the school and nark facilities. Mr. Miller was shown the proposed plan for the park as presented by the Sonoma County Planning Commission and Mr. Miller felt the plan would work in ''uite well with the school. Mr. Walt Morris was appointed by the Community 'iervices District to f4.11 the vacancy left on the Recreation Commission by tr. Thomas Gillons and was welcomed by the Commission. Dale Monroe reported on the topigraphical survey of the park site stating that perhaps a map of the area could be obtained from .r. Miller. Also, Charles Marshall, District Engineer will be consulted in the matter. Mx. :•inroe stated that fill was available from Copeland Creek and all the Commission had to do was to make arrangements for transportation. tr. Morris stated he would handle the transportation of the fill with the assistance of Richard Lochran. The baseball diamond was next discussed and it was felt by the Commission that a representative or representatives of the Little League base- ball club should be invited to the next Commission meeting. The secretary was reeuested to write an invitational letter to Mr. %gene H. Shreve of the Little League. The plan for the baseball diamond will be further discussed at the March 20th, 1961 meeting. The secretary was reeluested to write a letter to the United States Air Force regarding the possibility of obtaining a discarded airplane • to be put in the play area for the children's enjoyment. Discussion of a community building on the park site was held. Mr. Morris offered to prepare a plan for the building in time for the March 20th meeting. The Commission considered the purchasing of small- trees from the Pane 2 Minutes of 'larch 7, 1°61 Division of Forestry at their bargain prices and setting up a nursery for the future parks. Further study of this idea will be made by the Commission when the reneral plan of the park has proeressed to that point. During the course of the meeting, the Community Services District delivered copies of the Recreation Ordnance as prepared by the District's attorney. The Commission felt that there would not be sufficient time then to consider the ordnance and advised the District by phone that the ordnance would be revised in time for the next District Meeting. Also in attendance at the meeting was Mr. Nore F. Thiesfeld, rep- resent,ne the Sonoma County Planning Commission. Mr. Thiesfeld presented the nark plan for approval by the commission. The Commission unanimously approved the plan. The secretary was in- structed to write the Sonoma County Planning Commission a letter expressing the Commission's gratitude for their services. Liz Cochran stated she would have an over-all operational budget for the swimming pool worked up by the next Commission meeting for the Commission's approval and recommendation to the Rohnert Park Community Services District. Brief discussion was held regarding the preparation of the Recreation Commission's budget to be submitted to the board of directors for the fiscal year 1961-62. Further discussion of this matter will be held at the March 20th meeting. The kite contest to be held on March 10th was discussed and Commission members to assist on that day will be Elizabeth Cochran, Maxine Menzies and Nancy Thiesfeld. Dale Monroe will obtain the prizes through donations from a local store. Mr. ?Filler was thanked for attending the meeting and offering his views on the park plan.
