111/ Minutes for May 15, 1961, :Meeting
On May 15, 1961, at 7:30 p.m, the Rohnert Park Recreation Commission -
met at 6950 Commerce 31vd., Cotati, California, for their regular bi-
monthly public meeting. Commissioners present were: Maxine 'enzies,
Elizabeth Cochran, Norman Francisco, Dale i;onroe and Nancy Thiesfeld.
Also in attendance was Winnie Robinson and Mr. Peter Callanan.
The meeting was opened with the reading of the minutes of the last meeting_
and minutes were approved as read. A resume of the May 2, 1961, District
meeting pertaining to Recreation as compiled by the Recreation Secretary
were read for the information of the Commission. Incoming correspondence
was read by the secretary and consisted of a program of the California
Senior Citizens Convention. The program reflected the activities to be
held on May 17-18, 1961, at Disneyland and was in the form of an invita-
tion for attendance of any Senior Citizen Or"up in this recreational
district. The other incoming correspondence was from Prickett's Nursery
regarding their financial proposal for landscaping and installing
sprinkler systems in "A" Neighborhood Park Site. Outgoing correspondence
was read to the Commission and met with their approval.
Discussion of the Swim Pool concessions was held with Mrs. Robinson.
The Commission stated that Mr. Robinson's offer of 10% of the net
sales was not adenuate. The Commission made the following proposal
for Yr. Robinson's consideration: 4% of the gross sales, exclusive
be of sales tax or ";200 per month rental; whichever of the two were greatest
for the month would be paid to the Rohnert Park Recreation Commission.
Mrs. Robinson advised that she would take this proposal home to her
husband and would advise of his decision by telephone during the meeting.
Mrs. aobinson telephoned later and advised that her husband agreed to the
Commission's proposal.
The Commission also discussed the following with Mrs. Robinson while
she was present at the meeting: The Commission advised that all ecuip-
ment used by the concessionaire would have to be provided by him.
The Commission stated that the opening and closing time of the concession
stand would be at the discretion of the concessionaire, however, the
stand would have to be open at all times that the pool was in use by the
public. Typesof food to be sold were discussed and sirs. Robinson enumerated
what could be provided, which were hot sandwiches, soft drinks, pasteries,
candy, gum, and ice cream. Mrs. Robinson was advised that the ticket
taking would be the responsibility of the pool manager.
After Mrs. Robinson left the meeting, Mr. Callanan brought up the cuestion
of sale of bathing caps, ear plugs, nose plugs, etc. The Commission
stated they would gover this matter with Mr. Robinson in the near future.
The Commission reouested the secretary to write a formal recommendation
to the District Board to accept the Commission's proposal to the Concessionaire
and have the District's attorney draw up a contract.
111/ Report on the 1961-62 Recreation Commission Budget was given by Mrs.
Thiesfeld. She stated that she had met with Mr. Peter Callanan, a member
of the District Board of Directors, and had secured the necessary in-
formation to compile the budget and would have same for presentation at

the next Recreation Meeting.
Report on fill for "A" Neighborhood Park was given by Dale Monroe. He
stated that arrangements for fill had not been made to date. It was
suggested that Jack Buchanan be contacted regarding transportation of the
fill previously located by the Commission from Copeland Creek. Mrs.
Menzies will contact Mr. Buchanan.
Report on the "A" Neighborhood Community Building was to be given by
Walt Morris, however, Mr. Morris was not in attendance. Mrs. Thiesfeld
made a report on the Community Recreation Building in Kenilworth Park,
Petaluma, California. Mrs. Thiesfeld outlined her findings to the
Commission. (See Report) The Commission stated they would hold the
matter over pending a report from Mr. Morris.
Swim Pool House to House Canvas was discussed. It was reported that most
of the community had been covered. It was reported that Swim Pool Member-
ships were coming in better than the preceding year.
Report on painting the Swim Pool fence and building was given by Dale
Monroe. He advised that nothing definate had been worked out at the
present.
SThe Commission felt that in view of the nearing date of the pool opening
that it would be more feasible to contract the painting. Mrs. Menzies
will get 2 bids on the ,job. The bids are to be broken down as to the cost
for the outside and inside.
Cutting of the weeds and clean up of the front of the pool area was dis-
cussed. The secretary was instructed to contact Mr. Ralph Chase who is
working with the newly formed teenage club, and ask their assistance
in this project. The secretary was authorized to offer as high as a0.00
for the club treasury. The job should be done on or before the weekend
of i'ay 20-21st, 1961.
Putting in an outside window in the concession stand was discussed and
Norman Francisco stated he would contact the District Maintenance man,
Bill Wiggins, re gard;ng this matter.
Report on Swim Pool Opening Day was given by co-chairmen, Mrs. Cochran
and Mrs. enzies. They stated there would be the following booths:
20-30, Little Lea€ue, Teen-Age, Beer Booth, and Women's Club. Proceeds
from these booths are to go for Recreation Activities and Park Development.
Booths will open at 12:00, May ?8th, 1961. The program for that day
is to consist of a water ballet, majorettes, singing groups, Diving
exhibition, dance numbers and Little League game. Don Sherwood will
be contacted regarding M.C.ing the program. A P.A. system will be
provided and the seating arrangements will be investigated. A contest
for naming the nark will be held at the opening. Mrs. Thiesfeld
suggested giving a fimily pool membership to the winner, and if the
winner already had a membership their money would be refunded.

residents of Rohnert Park have not seen the pool. It was felt that opening
day would allow them to see what they were getting for their membership.
Maxine =''enzies advised that it would be necessary to have a temporary
beer license for the beer booth. The Recreation Secretary was instructed
to prepare a letter to the State Board of Eeualization for the District 's
signature stating the District gives their permission for the operation.
Procurement of bike racks for the Swim Pool parking lot was reported on
by Norman Francisco. He stated that arrangements h-d not been made to
date, but that he would try to make arrangementsbefore the pool was
in operation.
Report on UsedPlayground equipment was made by Dale 1'onroe. rie reported
that no progress had been made to date. Mrs. Thiesfeld suggested that
the head of a school district be contacted and attempt made to locate
a source for some used equipment. The Recreation Secretary was instructed
to phone Ray Miller, Superintendent of Cotati School District.
Narrowing of the Swim Pool entrance was discussed and Norman Francisco
stated he would contact Bill Wiggins to see what arrangements could be
made.
Recreation Activities were discussed. ::axine Menzies stated she had
some information on possible typesof activities. Mrs. Thiesfeld suggested
that one member of the Commission be in charge of planning a monthly
recreation activity. It was felt by the Commission that the pool opening
day would serve as the activity for the month of I•:ay. Mrs. Thiesfeld
also suggested working ALth the newly formed art club to sponsor a
children's art exhibit at the close of swimming seas'n, using the
inside fence of the pool for the exhibit.
Report on the "At' neighborhood Sewage Line Plan was given by : rs.
Thiesfeld. She advised that recommendation for same had been made to
the District and the District gave their approval to contact Charles
Marshall and obtain a sewage plan. Ms. Thiesfeld advised that she
had contacted Mr. Marshall for the plan.
Report on purchase of a diving board for the Swim Pool was made by
Liz Cochran. She statedthat one bid was in the process with I .
Anderson of Rapp Construction. She stated I e would obtain other bids.
The Commission felt the diving board should be installed before the
Swim Pool Opening Day. Mrs. Cochran stated she would handle the matter.
A program for beautification of the community was presented by Mrs.
Thiesfeld. She advised that the District was made an offer by the
developers to landscape the parking strip along Southwest Blvd. The
developers would put in the landscaping if the District or 1ecreation
• Commission would provide maintenance. A majority of the Commission
felt that it would not be feasible for the Commission to take on the
task at this time.

the Treasurer at each meeting was proposed by .ors. Thiesfeld. The
Commission so elected Maxine Menzies.
An oral resignation from the Recreation Commission was received from
Dale Monroe, chairman. hr. Monroe suited he was moving to Santa Rosa.
Norman Francisco moved that the Commission accept .°r. Eonroe's resignation
with regret. '_he motion was carried.
The Commission decided to wait until a replacement for the Commission
was found and then the election of a new chairman could be held.
The Recreation :.:ecretary will conduct the meetings until the election
is held.
Mrs. Thiesfeld suggested that a representation from "B" neighborhood
be obtained and offered some names for the position. They were Mr.
Jim LeBoeuff, ir. Boyd nice and hr. Strathers.
Discussion of the Little League's construction activities on the
"A" Neighborhood Ball Diamond was held. The Recreation Secretary was
instructed to reouest the District to write a letter to the College
View Boys Club reminding them that anything pertainin€ to Park
Development should first go before the Rohnert Park Recreation Commission.
.axine Menzies stated that she had contacted Dr. Robertsof Cotati and
advised him of the pool opening and reouested his services if the
occassion arose.
The meeting was then adjourned.
