New Driver Program
Purpose: to educate new drivers about safe driving habits, applicable laws, how to interact with
law enforcement, how to deal with collisions and road rage incidents through in-class and slow
speed scenarios
What the Program is NOT: Teaching kids how to get out of tickets
Participants: Must have learner’s permit (accompanied by parent/guardian) or license (parent
welcome; not required)
Pilot program: Max 10 participants (not including parent/guardian)
Duration: 2 hours
Topics:
Review of laws pertaining to new drivers
What to do when an emergency vehicle has lights and sirens activated (yield to right, do NOT
attempt to cross intersection against a red light)
What to do when pulled over by police (how to interact with law enforcement, what
documents to provide)
What to do if you are issued a citation (refer to court date, look at back of citation to see
website to check on the status of the ticket, can my parent make my ticket go away?)
What to do if you are involved in a non-injury collision (what information to exchange, non-
emergency line: 707 584 2600)
What to do if you are involved in a collision with injury
What to do if you are involved in a road rage incident (drive to 500 City Center Dr.)
Cell phone use dangers and laws
Requests:
Use of briefing/training room for in-class instruction
Use of State Farm property (or other) for scenarios (practice traffic stops, pulling over to the
right for emergency vehicles, providing information after a collision)
Purchase bulk registration and insurance organizers ($20 for 12)
