4111 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert
Park :.net this date in regular session commencing at 3:00 p.m. in
the City Offices, 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park, with
Chairman Taylor presiding.
Call to Order Chairman Taylor called the regular session to order at
approximately 3:00 p.m. and led the pledge of allegiance.
Oath of Office The Oath of Office was administered at this point in the meeting
to newly appointed Commissioner John Chase by Deputy City Clerk
Troy Dettling. Coninissioner Chase then took his seat on the
Commission.
Roll Call Present: (5) Commissioners Chase, Ferra, Lyons, Stevens and
Taylor
Absent: (1) None
Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Council liasou
William Cavalli and Administrative Assistant Mel Jones.
Approval of Minutes Upon motion of Commissioner Ferra, seconded by Commissioner
Stevens, and unanimously approved, the minutes of August 25,
l(i63 were approved as submitted.
Announcements by Chairman Taylor read aloud a letter of appreciation from ,ex-
111. Commissioner Peter McCormick thanking the Commission for the
farewell reception given on his behalf.
Chairman Taylor noted that all Commissioners had received an
invitation from the Petaluma People Services Center's open house
on September 30, 19E3 .
Unscheduled Public Dorothy Shepherd, 101 Enterprise Drive was recognized and
Appearances initiated discussion concerning the possibility of restricting
smoking at the senior citizen drop-in center.
Marian iiorgan, Senior Citizen Drop-In Center Coordinator was
recognized and submitted to the Comission a petition signed by
seniors wishing to restrict smoking at the senior citizen drop-
in center. Mrs. Morgan expressed that the center had a problem
with poor air circulation in the building and suggested that the
ventilation system be looked into. Discussion followed.
Coau.Eissioner Ferra pointed out that the smoke gets very dense in
the drop-in center at times and bothered many of the seniors
with breathing difficulties. Commissioner Ferra suggested that
staff check into the ventilation system to see if it were
properly circulating the air. Discussion followed.
Administrative Assistant Jones pointed out that it was not the
111 desire of the City Council to mandate the use of the senior

drop-in center and that a resolution of these concerns should be
worked out arloungst the individuals that use the facility. Ur.
Jones indicated that he would check into the matter of the
ventilation system.
Councilman Cavalli suggested the possibility of installing a
ceiling fan to help circulate the air in the room.
Irs. Morgan reported that the senior center carpeting could use
cleaning as well as the white chair. Drs. Morgan indicated that
she felt the white chair at the center was inappropriate since
it always appeared dirty.
Commissioner Lyons expressed that he felt the senior citizen
drop-in center vas too small a facility to accomodate the
number of visitors that it handles.
Senior Citizen Drop- Commissioner Stevens reported on the attendance for the Senior
In Center Attendance Citizen Drop-In Center for the months of August and September,
Report 1983. Commissioner Stevens sut+mitted a copy of the attendance
report (a copy of which is attached to the original set of these
minutes).

Crosswalks - Commerce Administrative Assistant Jones referred to City Engineer
Blvd./Enterprise Dr. trust's inter-office memorandum dated July 29, 1963 concerning
the pedestrian crosswalks at Commerce Boulevard and Enterprise 1111/
Drive and noted that it was city staff's feeling that amount of
time set to walk across the street was sufficient. Discussion
followed.
Commissioner Ferra noted that the major problem centered around
vehicles making a right hand turn from Commerce Boulevard onto
Enterprise Drive while there were pedestrians in the cross walk.
Tricycles Riding at Administrative Assistant Jones referred to Director of Public
Shopping Centers Safety Dennett's inter-office memorandum dated August 2, 1983
stating that according to the Director's interpretation of the
City's code, bicycles are not prohibited from riding on shopping
center sidewalks unless posted. Mr. Jones further explained
that it was the responsibility of the shopping center owner to
post signs restricting bicycle riding in shopping centers.
Discussion followed.
Mrs. Marian Horgan was recognized suggested that the City
request that a "Ho Bicycle Riding on Sidewalk" sign be placed in
front of the senior citizen drop-in center. The Commission
concurred.

National Alzheiner's Administrative Assistant Jones noted that November had been
Disease iionth designated as national Alzheiner' s Disease honth by President
IP Regan and that the City and Petaluma People Services Center were
sponsoring an Alheiner' s awareness presentation at the 3urton
Avenue Recreation Center, November 1, 1983 at 7:00 p.m. hr.
Jones urged all Commissioners to attend the presentation.
National Conference Administrative Assistant Jones reported receiving a brochure
from the National Council on Aging pertaining to a National
Conference scheduled for April 4-7 , 1934 in Washington, D.C.
Jr. Jones noted that there were no funds in the Commission' s
budget to attend seminars/conferences etc.
Councilman Cavalli suggested that if any member of the
Commission really wanted to attend the conference that they
should approach the City Council on the natter.
Senior Legislature Administrative Assistant Jones introduced Senior Assemblymen Ray
Firestone and Emery Lassard to give a presentation concerning
the Senior Legislature.
Assemblyman emery Lassard briefly explained the purpose of the
Senior Legislature and the many accomplishments of same. Ur.
Lassard recapped briefly the Senior Legislatures ten top
priority bills that they are presently working on for
presentation to the State.
Assemblyman Firestone further explained some of the many
projects currently in the works by the Senior Legislature.
Discussion followed.
Administrative Assistant Jones thanked tir. Lassard and Mr. Emery
for their presentation. hr. Jones expressed that the Senior
Legislature was a very good resource and urged the Commission to
keep abreast of its activities.
Adjournment There being no further business and no one further desiring to
be heard the meeting was adjourned at approximately 4: 12 p.m. to
November 17, L=:33.
