1988/10/20 Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES October 20 , 1988 410 The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met this date in regular session commencing at 3 : 00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall , 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park, with Chairman Chase presiding. Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at approximately 3 : 00 p.m. and led the pledge of allegiance. Present: (4 ) Commissioners Lyons, Kennedy, Jennis and Chairman Chase . Absent: ( 0) None. Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau, Administrative Assistant Caroline Fabio, and the secretary. Approval of Minutes Upon a motion by Commissioner Jennis and seconded by Commissioner Lyons, the Minutes of September 15 , 1988 were approved as submitted. 411 Announcements by Chairman Chairman Chase inquired about the vacancy on the Commission and when it might be filled. Administrative Assistant Caroline Fabio indicated that a decision will be made at a December City Council Meeting. Chairman Chase stated that Officer Martin is aware that Judd Snyder of the Clarion wishes to meet with him regarding articles to be published in the paper on earthquake preparedness . Commissioner Kennedy read Chairman Chase's letter to Senator Cranston regarding Medicare and catastrophic health care for seniors. Discussion followed on bicycle riders and their apparent lack of knowledge regarding the rules of the road. Chairman Chase suggested classes or courses that Public Safety might sponsor to inform the public. Administrative Assistant Fabio pointed out that Public Safety already does educational training in the schools in this area. Chairman Chase stated that perhaps an article in the Clarion is warranted. Commissioner Jennis responded further that it wouldn't 411 do any good until people start caring. -1- Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes October 20 , 1988 t (" Senior Center The issue of a new senior center in Rohnert Park was discussed with regards to Mr. Codding's building. The seniors feel the existing building is inadequate , but could be made adequate with additional funds. In addition, they are opposed to having separate meetings regarding the senior center and wish to be included in the process and be kept informed of how much Codding's building will cost, etc. Senior Scheduler Brazeau updated the Commission on what progress has taken place so far and indicated that it would be a good ideat.o have a member of the Commission present at the meetings. Fabio Leaves At approximately 3 : 15 p.m. , Administrative Assistant Fabio left the meeting. Discussion continued on the senior center. Commissioner Jennis inquired if an administrator would be hired for the center, and Ms. Brazeau replied affirmatively. Fabio Returns At approximately 3 : 20 p.m. , Administrative Assistant Fabio rejoined the meeting. Chairman Chase added that he felt the center should be run by someone from Rohnert Park or Cotati and not • from another city or area. He further stated he would respond on behalf of the Commission to Ms . Jackie Lewis's letter regarding the above. Mr. Karl Kim, 215 Fauna Court, was recognized and stated that in regards to a boutique inside the Senior Center, that consignors from all over Sonoma County should be accepted. Drop-In Center Report Chairman Chase recognized Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau who updated the Commission on senior activities. She mentioned that a petition was received from A.A.R.P. to rescind the legislation on catastrophic health care. Chairman Chase indicated that he has received 200 signatures so far. The Senior Drop-In Center had 1 , 893 visitors in September. There were 26 working days with an average of 73 visitors per day. There were eleven new visitors. There will be a Halloween Party on Halloween . The • costume contest will begin at 3 p.m. On November 4 , there will be a seminar on "Financing Health Care" . Everyone is invited to attend. -2- Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Minutes October 20 , 1988 411 Today , there was a day trip to Sebastopol , which was enjoyed by all those who attended. Volunteers Commissioner Jennis stated that Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau and Public Safety Officer Martin are working together to organize and train volunteers as "Disaster Service Workers" . Administrative Assistant Caroline Fabio stated that all City full-time, regular employees are required to go through CPR training and be certified each year. Unscheduled Public Appearances Mr. Karl Kim, 215 Fauna Court, was recognized by Chairman Chase and announced a meeting to be held on October 24th at the Petaluma City Hall with Barbara Boxer regarding long-term health care legislation. Communications None .
