The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Rohnert Park met
this date in regular session commencing at 3 : 00 p.m. in the Council
Chambers at City Hall , 6750 Commerce Boulevard, Rohnert Park, with
Chairman Chase presiding.
Swearing In Administrative Assistant Caroline Fabio administered
the Oaths of Office to Lenore Jurgiel , Flo Jennis and
John Chase and they responded affirmatively and signed
their Oaths of Office.
Hanlon &
Brazeau Arrive At approximately 3 : 02 p.m. Recreation Supervisor
Many Hanlon and Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau joined
the meeting.
MOTION Upon a motion by Commissioner Ann Kennedy, seconded by
Commissioner Herb Lyons with all in favor, John Chase
was re-appointed Chairman of the Senior Citizens
Advisory Commission.
MOTION Upon a motion by Chairman Chase, seconded by
Commissioner Flo Jennis with all in favor, Ann Kennedy
was re-appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the Senior
Citizens Advisory Commission.
• Call to Order Chairman Chase called the regular session to order at
approximately 3 : 03 p.m. and led the pledge of
allegiance.
Present: (5) Commissioners Kennedy, Jennis , Lyons ,
Jurgiel and Chairman Chase.
Absent: ( 0) None.
Staff present for all or part of the meeting: Senior
Scheduler Wendy Brazeau, Recreation Supervisor Mary
Hanlon, Administrative Assistant Caroline Fabio and
the secretary.
October 20th
Minutes Commissioner Jennis inquired if a small correction on
Page 2 of the Minutes of October 20 , 1988 could be
made relative to the adequacy of the Senior Center
building. The Commissioners concurred.
Approval of
Minutes Upon a motion by Commissioner Kennedy and seconded by
Commissioner Jennis with all in favor, the Minutes of
November 17 , 1988 were approved as submitted.
Announcements by
Chairman Chairman Chase read Senator Alan Cranston's response
to his letter regarding the 1988 Castastrophic Health
IliLaw. Mr. Chase read his letter to Claud Pepper
regarding AARP and stated he has received no response.
Mr. Chase read Congresswoman Barbara Boxer's reply
letter regarding same .

• Karl Kim Mr. Karl Kim, 215 Fauna Avenue, was recognized and
spoke on a meeting he had had with Congressman Doug
Bosco regarding funding problems and catastrophic
health care. Mr. Kim does not advocate repealing of
the bill because it may help some seniors . According
to Mr. Kim, Congressman Bosco stated he had not been
aware of some of the funding provisions . He
encouraged the people to write Congressman Bosco and
state their views and suggestions .
Discussion followed.
Wendy Brazeau Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau was recognized and
announced that on March 7 at the Community Center at
1 : 30 or 2 : 00 p.m. there will be a Blue Cross speaker
on catastrophic health care.
In addition, she announced that next Tuesday at 1 : 30
p.m. at the Community Center, Eye Assistance of
Sebastopol will provide free eye screening.
In response to questions from Commissioner Jennis, Ms.
Brazeau stated that she had spoken with Public Safety
Officer William Martin and a timeline has been
established to train the disaster service workers.
Ms. Brazeau is taking the names of interested senior
411 volunteers. An information phone line is in the
process of being set up. Commissioner Jennis
reiterated the importance of keeping the disaster
preparedness issue in the forefront. Ms. Hazel
Brubaker, Senior Nutrition Site Manager, was
recognized and stated she has spoken with Public
Safety on having a speaker on a regular basis to
address her group at the senior nutrition site
regarding these issues.
Chairman Chase commented that an article on the topic
had appeared in the local paper but more involvement
is still needed.
Mary Hanlon Recreation Supervisor Mary Hanlon was recognized and
welcomed newly-appointed Commissioner Jurgiel .
Codding Center Ms. Hanlon informed the Commission that the senior
center will be called the Codding Center because there
will be other tenants using the building in addition
to the seniors. She announced there will be a meeting
at 4 : 00 p.m. on January 31 and requested a member of
the Commission be present. Ms. Hanlon indicated that
the seniors should communicate their suggestions to
her since she is directly involved and will be meeting
with the City Manager to inform him of the needs of
the various groups which may be using the facility.
Residential
Care Update Commissioner Jennis updated the Commission on
residential care in Sonoma County. She recently was
in contact with Ms. Marge Ling and requested that Ms .

Ling be put on the Agenda for the March 16th meeting
of the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission. Ms . Ling
has indicated she will send Commissioner Jennis a copy
of the their program and the Minutes from their
February meeting, updating their goals. Commissioner
Jennis restated that there is a tremendous need for
this program in the Sonoma County area .
Discussion followed on the plight of the homeless in
Sonoma county. Commissioner Jennis explained that
many people are homeless because they cannot afford
the first and last months' rent and cleaning deposit
to move into an apartment. She has learned of a
program in Petaluma where people can borrow the money
for first , last and deposit and pay it back in minimal
monthly payments .
Drop-In Center
Report Commissioner Jennis stated that the center was open 26
days in December and that 2 , 127 people visited with a
daily average of 80+ people visiting. For the
calendar year 1988 , there was a total of 24 , 192
visitors!
Senior
Nutrition Ms . Hazel Brubaker commented that she has 62 home
delivered meals and is pleased with the program. They
411 are helping a lot of people.
Discussion followed on whether or not to provide
speakers on disaster preparedness at the Senior Drop
In Center. Commissioner Jennis did not think it would
go over very well and Senior Scheduler Brazeau
concurred because the center was strictly meant for
socializing.
Pat Castello Ms. Pat Castello, 430 Santa Barbara Drive, was
recognized and suggested having a single line printed
in the SCAN newsletter on the subject. It could be a
'What to do if . . . ' type of sentence . The Commission
concurred that this was a good idea.

Brazeau Leave At approximately 3 : 45 p.m. Recreation Supervisor Mary
Hanlon and Senior Scheduler Wendy Brazeau left the
meeting.
Commissioner Jurgiel commented that they had fall out
shelters in New York and that because no lists were
kept of the supplies and items were not dated, much of
it spoiled. Her point was that things must be
organized, supervised and kept up-to-date.
The Late
Commissioner
Daisy Dolby Administrative Assistant Caroline Fabio indicated that
staff is working on a plaque in memory of the late
Commissioner Daisy Dolby.

OMobile Home
Repairs Commissioner Kennedy commented that the program
providing mobile home repair loans by the Sonoma
County Community Development Commission appears to be
a success.
Meeting
Adjourned There being no further business to discuss and no one
further desiring to be heard, Commissioner Jennis made
a motion, seconded by Commissioner Kennedy to adjourn
the meeting of the Rohnert Park Senior Citizens
Advisory Commission at approximately 3 : 50 p.m.
